I still can't muster much enthusiasm for the Seated Liberty obverse design, but I love that flying eagle in a field of stars. On the whole, I think I'd rather see this coin nicely repaired (and documented as such) than with this crude and oddly-positioned hole.

If i had 5 grand to burn i'd buy it. Then i'd turn it into a silver puddle on my garage floor with an acetylene torch, just on general principles.

 

Anyway I look at that coin, I can't see a value on it other than "too bad."

Couldn't hurt. A skillful repair would definitely look a lot better than a gaping hole. While they're at it, maybe do something about the rim bumps. Except for the hole, it's got a very nice look for a circulated dollar.

It's a beautiful original skin coin. Except for the hole. I'd buy it and have it skillfully repaired. Then send back to get details graded as holed and plugged. Then sell it to someone that can't afford the 10k for a straight graded coin. I feel the price is fair. And that it could skillfully repaired possibly retail at $6500. But I wouldn't personally want a coin with this problem in my own collection

 

It has a hole in it, somebody destroyed its value by putting a hole in it. it's less than worthless to me, it should be melted so nobody has to own the abomination.

What about other antiques? If a magnificent Chippendale got a chip in it, would you burn it? If King Tut's mask got a scratch, would you incinerate it?

That is one of the most absurd responses I have ever read. If you have an unlimited collecting budget more power to you, most other people would be thrilled with that piece.

I see value in holed coins, but they aren't my collecting cup of tea. I see them as someone within the life of that coin was really proud of what they owned and wanted to wear it. I get that, but I wouldn't be as proud of it as they were so I leave them be.

I have an extreme aversion to holed coins. as far as the other crap you're talking about, i could care less. Because i talk about melting a holed coin, you make the leap to assume i want to melt cleaned coins too? I find your logic flawed

 

Would you really melt something really rare just because of a hole? I would sell it and find something that fits my interest.

 

I've owned holed coins. To me their a part of their history Would you wantonly destroy this historic piece after its survived 350 years?? Not me!! I bought it and sold it and made $250 on it and eventually I'll find one that fits all the criteria for my own collection and I'll keep that one. Just like a Gobrecht dollar

 

Most if not all collectors have an aversion to holed coins. Destroying one is just a bit extreme, but I found the comment bold and amusing. Anytime you got a problem coin, you can guarantee that no dealer would ever allow you to profit or at least break even when you have to sell.

 

That's true for basically any coin though if you try and sell it back to the person you bought it from. Unless the market moves substantially upward while you owned it they obviously have to pay you less then you paid to be able to make money on resale
