What's wrong with this Morgan?

Saw this on ebay.

Why do you think something is wrong with it?

 

Environmental damage to what looks to me to be a copy"fake", in a slab, that no one with this sort of money should be bidding on. I wouldn't . As a coin of this date with this much meat on it , that looks like that Red Flag!

 

Looks like he used a scanner to image it instead of actual pictures. Probably came from an XF details slab for cleaning

 

Looks cleaned and artificially retoned

 

Scanner coin........shoot the works as to what it's condition is.......

 

This from the hip "fake" nonsense needs to stop. Try VAM 2.

With that said though, OP, if not familiar with this seller, a little searching should be rather enlightening.

If it's scanned, that might explain the coin's appearance. But if that is anything like the coin itself I wouldn't touch it. Nasty. Dipped to death?

Thank you, I've just gotten into collecting Morgans and I still have a lot to learn.

 

Does that mean you'd buy it if you had the chance?

Yes, I did. I also checked the seller's feedback and it's NOT someone I'd buy from. I will admit though it is one of the better 1893s currently on ebay and I wondered why it looked so different.

 

FWIW, as soon as I saw who the seller was, I didn't need to search anything.

I haven't dug through the seller's feedback, at least in recent memory, but I am familar with who is he as many of us are. However, do understand that regardless of what you saw in his that turned you away from ever purchasing from him, some of the biggest dreck peddlers on ebay also have stellar feedback, and it isn't something that should have too much weight placed on it. Although this may go against what one would expect, it's not that difficult to do, especially for well established peddlers who have built a following and have been around long enough drive those who know better away. Another unfortunately aspect of feedback is it could've been left by a complete fool who doesn't know the first thing about what they've just purchased, or by someome with vast knowledge and experience; we just don't know who is who and which is which. With all that said though, you're wise to stay away.

The first part of my earlier post had only to do with how awfully common it is on this forum for the "fake" crutch to be thrown around, and how doing so only contributes to the regretable paranoia that helps no one. Is the coin clear enough to say with absolute certanty and beyond the slightest doubt that it's genuine? No, but enough can be seen that it lends much to the likelihood of authenticity.

Now, I assume I know what you're referring to, but for the sake of clarity, when you say it is "different", what exactly is your concern?

 

For a coin like this, either slabbed or do without.

 

Thanks for clarifying, what I mean by different is the color or the lack of it (is it dipped and/or AT?). I was just looking for opinions, I did not mean to imply it was fake.
