So if you think you have an exceptional or error coin in a US mint issued cellophane set, would it be to your advantage to submit the coin to the TPG in the cellophane with breaking it out? Would or wouldn't at least help verify that the coin has never been touched or cleaned?
No experience here, but my 'common man' mentality says leave it in the packaging. That way they'll see the coin is original in nature........
I doubt that it would make much difference since the first step in the grading process, "Receiving", is where the coin is catalogued and removed from the OGP. The graders won't see the coin until later. Chris
That is definitely not worth submitting. Why are you submitting it? As for the touching and cleaning that you are concerned about (mentioned in your first post) - both of these would leave evidence on the coin, and would be seen by the graders. It doesn't matter if you submit it in the mint plastic, because it very well may have been touched before even going in there. The coin itself tells the story of its life.
@physics-fan3.14, No, you're right. It's not financially feasible. I was just asking the question (pro's & con's) about submitting any significant coin in the OGP'ing for grading. Here's the greaser:
When I have submitted currency at a major show, they only want the coin sent to them. No holders, flips, airtites or mint packaging. They give you a coin envelope to put it in. They don't want to be responsible for any additional items beyond the coin itself. Unless it's submitted as a cross over or replacement slab...etc.
