Thanks, sorry the photo does not do the coin justice....looks almost like prooflike. thankfully the Byzantine minted a ton of gold coins, so they are affordable compered to Imperial Roman Aurei which @ cost a small fortune.

The history is fascinating, gets complicated towards 12th Century, with the Crusades. The coin quality really went downhill from that time on. John

It should come as no surprise that I do not care whether a coin is prooflike or not but I do really like this coin for the unusual reverse legend spelling out TIBERI while the obverse has no trace of that name. Earlier Romans would never have spelled out a praenomen like that but by the time of this coin the rules had changed if anyone even remembered there were rules. My year 8 Constantinople follis shows the more standard TIB usage which still was unlike the standard Roman TI.
