I went to 15 different banks today including my main bank which I bank at and not a one had Kennedy's except my bank that I always get a few hundred dollars each time, this is the 10th time in the past couple months that I was only able to get half's from my bank. Well today I stopped in and got a few hundred and the teller seemed a bit annoyed that I was getting them so I asked what the problem was and he said he hated Kennedy's so I asked why, he said because he's all the time dealing with people that goes through them. I told him that I go through them and take them to another bank so they don't have to deal with it and he said its not me but it was an old man that everyday comes in and buys hundreds of them at a time sits in his car and brings them back and buys more. I asked why they allowed him to do that he told me the old man had been doing it for years and he apparently knows someone high up in that bank and was told to let him. I now see why banks don't like to keep Kennedy's and its because of someone like this. I try to make it easy on the people that supply me with half's so I can keep getting them but apparently not everyone thinks the same way as me. Well with that being said I know why I haven't had any luck at all in getting silver I've gone through 10 grand give or take and not so much as a 40 % so I guess I'm going to have to get someone to order me boxes from the reserve from now on.

You are doing it right and keep on doing so. But order your own sealed box from your bank and bring a box of donuts with you when you pick them up the next time. A small act of kindness works wonders and you won't be going through someone else throw away's. Works for me. Oh, and also be prompt to pick up your order.

What a crock! So, you don't dump them back at your bank. Big deal! You dump them somewhere else. Don't you! There are others who do just like you, and dump them somewhere else, which includes your bank! More and more of the banks are reacting to this by charging a service fee just for providing the rolls to you, and it's your fault. So, stop whining!

I don't even take them to the bank when I'm done. I will use them for tips and to pay for small purchases at convenience stores. Usually they are quite pleased. Comments like " Oh wow, I have not seen these before, they are going in my pocket". Or " I'm going to save these for my grandchildren". Takes awhile to unload but I do not do halves all that often.

I wasn't "whining" about finding someone's dump it happens, what I was talking about was that there are people that put bank tellers through unnecessary hassles like the person I talked about. Yea I do take my searched change to another bank and yes I'm sure others do the same at mine but to say that banks charging fee's is my fault pfft! Do you have issues with someone making a statement? Because it seems like you have negative comments about just about everything I have posted and I seen many others that all you had to say was condescending. I understand you probably get tired of seeing the same posts or someone saying something you disagree with but to be condesending is a bit much. Understand that not everyone has been here as long as you so when we post something its new to us. Feel free to disagree with whatever I say but loose the attitude please and thank you.

I try to spend as much as possible myself and I try to save them so I don't have to take them back to the bank but it seems like when I have a bunch saved something always comes up like now my wife has to have surgery so what I have put back is going to go to the deductible and for the time she's off work.

You were whining! You complained that of the 15 banks you went to, only your bank had any Kennedy half dollars. If that's not whining, I don't know what is.

I sincerely hope your wife makes a complete recovery from the surgery.

Thank you, it will be tough but it's something that if put off any longer will become something neither of us want. The 15 banks I referred to no longer do Kennedy halfs because people make it harder than it has to be by bringing in hundreds if not thousands of dollars at a time for them to dump, I only bring in 50 to 100 dollars at a time over a course of time and to a few different branches. I know it becomes annoying by just a few things bank tellers have told me but they themselves said it wouldnt be so bad if people had courtesy and werent rude when coming in and wanting to dump their change. Like Tommy I take some treats to the people that sell me the halfs and the bank where I dump them so it takes a little of the aggravation out of it. Also there are a bunch of banks that I stop in at that rarely have change because they are not a business banking institute mainly personal banking but I stop in just to see if they have some. If it seemed like I was whining about not getting halfs it wasnt meant to be about that but more about how people ruin it for others.

Heres my thing. Those tellers get a salary, or wage? It is there job to do customer service. Now a days people are acting put off for a job they were hired to do. If the bank is busy I understand, slow days, they should be doing it with a smile on there face! Ending with Thanks Come Again!

I've said it before... find a bank or CU with a coin counting machine for your dumps. Doesn't put off tellers, you could be dropping 60 lbs. of halves or 60 lbs of cents, doesn't matter.

My bank has tons of branches throughout the city and some charge service fees for halves and some don't. The one branch I mainly go to encourages me to search! They were the ones that offered to order them for me weekly when I first started CRH about 6 weeks ago. I have to hustle to get the rest of my halves during the week though. Usually involves calling branches and seeing if they have boxes of halves. I will start bringing the tellers chocolates, that's a good call to bring them something.

We all must learn to accept the fact that businesses no longer use, not only half dollars, but dollar coins as well. So, if they have no need for them, then why should the banks keep them in their inventory? If we must blame anyone, it should be the US government for continuing to produce them. Why doesn't Congress just declare the outstanding inventory obsolescent, giving people sufficient time to redeem them through the Fed, and discontinue making them altogether.

Wrong! It is their job to do what the boss tells them to do, and if they don't follow orders, they can be replaced.

The old saying, "The customer is always right." is nothing more than garbage. Most customers wouldn't know how to run a bank or any other business for that matter.

Just like most stores keep only a limited inventory, so must banks. Plus the costs to banks for transportation of bulk change has risen dramatically. The tellers really cannot be blamed, as Chris says, they are only following orders from above. Half dollars serve no useful purpose in commerce. They are only made for collectors and always have been as the vending industries simply refused, through their lobbyists, to change their machines to accept these coins. At the end of the day, a teller must count and re-count until every last cent is accounted for. I, for one, would not want that job for any money. And customer service has become a relic of the past. I cannot remember the last time I ran into a "Full Service" gas station that pumped gas, checked oil, air pressure or washed the windshield.

From years of being in business, Myself. The customer "is not" always right.
But if I do not provide my customers with excellent customer service!
I would be OUT of business.
I say use your own discretion,
But, if I want my money in 50 cent pieces it is there job to do so.
    My branch only!

I agree with you to a point about the customer not always being right, but as a general rule the customer is right but when it comes to a certain level it's all about business. There is only 2 places that I can think of that use half dollars as an everyday form of currency one is a beer store that has done it since they opened in the fifties that continues to give 50 cent pieces out for nostalgia purposes and the other is a car wash that offers the incentive to use them by giving you more time by using half dollars. So why doesnt the government pull them and make them obsolete? My guess is that there are collectors out there that are willing to pay a premium over face for them :)

True, but that was when silver was $5-10 per ounce. Is it my fault that some of you guys sleep late?

It seems to me that if you have an account at a bank then you are paying that bank to provide financial services to you, which should include making change for you. It's when people abuse this that problems arise.

For example, I have more than $20,000 sitting in my bank account. About twice a month I go there and buy about $200 in mixed changed and dump it at another branch after searching it all. At the end of the day my bank is making WAY more money off my account than they are paying a teller to handle those 2-4 transactions per month. If they ever denied me change I would close my account in a heartbeat and find another bank to do business with.

On the other hand, for someone to walk into a bank where they don't have an account, or to open an account and just keep a minimum balance, but then show up multiple times a week expecting tellers to manage dozens of transactions every month making change for them, then sure I can understand why a bank would be unhappy about that.

Seems to be this is pretty much an issue of common courtesy. We should expect banks to provide some services for us because we are paying them for it, but we should try to be careful that we are not abusing it and expecting them to spend more time servicing us than we are paying them via the money we deposited to our account.

When I dump in the coin counting machine, the teller always acts completely annoyed that she has to come and change out the bags. Does anyone else ever experience this?
