Coin World has reported that the soon to be released Centennial Mercury/Winged Liberty dime will NOT BE THE DIAMETER OF ITS DESIGN INSPIRATION. Coin World has stated the diameter at 16.5mm, the exact size of the current 1/10 ounce Gold Eagle, and NOT the diameter of the original Mercury/Winged Liberty Dime, which is 17.9mm. So don't rush out and place an order thinking you're getting a gold dime, in the same way the 2014 gold Kennedy was a true sized half dollar. What you'll be getting is a 1/10 ounce, 1/4 ounce, or 1/2 ounce bullion coin with a design "stolen" from classic coins. All will be smaller than implied. In recent months, the Mint has cleverly stopped saying "same" diameter in favor of "similar" diameter. To me, it is or it ain't. These ain't. The Mint could not repeal physics and chemistry, so they decided to hide the truth from their customers.
Yea, if the soon to be had gold half were the same diameter, they would have to be awfully thin, foil-like, easy to bend!
He's coming out with actual overstrikes of the designs in a few weeks kurt But shhh... don't tell anyone
I'd rather have bullion coins inspired by the classic 1916 designs than an AGE any day. This doesn't affect whether I'm going to buy them or not.
LOL. Considering how he's been dead over 100 years, I think I'm safe. Besides, I'd rather have a 2009 UHR than the equivalent dollar amount of AGEs. It's more faithful to the original design.
Augie's gone?!?!? I'm not sure I can cope. I need to take a few minutes. I'm getting a little verklempt here. Next you'll be telling me Weinman's dead too.
Hmmmm. Well, I can't say I'm surprised. lol I kept wondering how they could retain the same diameter and make them thinner without having the design come through on the other side AND fully strike up. The answer: they couldn't. So really the folly in their plans was going with .999 pure gold for these. How can they be in the business and not know? I'd rather see an 80/20, 90/10 composition and true to size examples made. Its a pity. I'll still buy at least one if the prices are reasonable. I guess 1.4 mm isn't that drastic.
Congress had NOTHING to do with this issue. This issue is entirely the "brainstorm" of the geniuses (as if...) at the U.S. Mint and the Citizens Coin Advisory Committee. They recently got two new members at CCAC. Maybe the new members can THINK. Clearly the CCAC as it was previously constituted could NOT. Strange as it seems, the staff of the Banking Committees at Congress know coins far better than current U.S. Mint management. I have sat in on meetings with Mint management. They are embarrassingly clueless career bureaucrat political appointees with no coin knowledge. They are marketers, pure and simple. Remember, these geniuses at the Mint are the same people who thought it was perfectly normal to gauge demand for the Truman and Eisenhower C&C sets based on the Roosevelt one with a regular proof presidential dollar. They know less than zero worth knowing.
