The mini-countdown is winding down! Today's "J" coin is a wonderful-looking bronze of the last pagan Roman emperor, Julian II "the Apostate". This coin is pretty much the close relative of the Jovian I recently posted in terms of condition, style, and mint location (it comes from Heraclea as well). Please post your coins of Julian II; I know he's common enough that some of you have at least one example :)

Loving the detailed military get-up on Julian :D

Above are Julian II as Augustus' AE3 portraits with military bust. His coins as Caesar including Falling Horsemen are ordinary right facers as are all of mine below.

Ae1 as Augustus Constantinople IMHO the best 'Pagan' type with sacrificial bull

Both of these 2 coins have Spes Republicae on reverse. The first was struck in Cyzicus and is rated scarce. As for the second, I can't make sure whether it was struck in Alexandria or Julian2 O RIC122.jpg Julian2 R Cyzicus scarce.jpg Jul 2RIC 194 ANDelta.jpg Jul 2R SPES Reipublice.jpg Antioch.

The Julian "bull" types comes with an eagle on the ground to the right only at Constantina (= Arelate = Arles)

My favorite long-winded emperor. Just be glad he's not alive today and posting on this forum. For something "short" and funny, read his satirical response to the people of Antioch for objecting to his beard: Misgpogon. I have only this FH at the moment, but it's quite acceptable for FH's of Julian, which are typically frazzled.

It's actually quite entertaining, and once you get into his ancient rhythm and style, it has a certain unique charm. His wit gradually unfolds into a scathing spoof of the Antiocheans by way of self-deprecating humor. Of all the Roman emperors, Julian II is the one I'd like to sit down and talk to - sort of like Dinner with Andre, but Dinner with Julian.

Of all the coins posted, my favorite has to be the bull reverse.

It's for this reason that I thought it'd be funny to have a beardy portrait of his from Antioch.
