I went to a little hole in the wall antique shop today and picked up a bag of world coins sight unseen and they were all separated in individual ziplock baggies and the very first baggie I just pulled out has 5 of these in it, Im guessing they all are vg-xf, now to continue through the bag and see what else I can find :) 54 franc.jpg 54 franc 2.jpg

For those of us who don't collect French coinage, can you explain the significance of the "No B"?

    Thanks! Chris

to be honest Chris I'm not entirely sure cause im not a world coin collector I just read that the 54 no b is rare and low mintage. When I get done searching through the bag I'm going to do some researching.

The 1954 without B mintmark has the least # issued for this coin (2M) and thus I suppose is the key date. My catalog says to check carefully where the B would have been for manipulation/removal of a B. This photo appears to have soemthing going on in all the fields - is that something you did in PS, or is that the way the coin looks?

Huh. You said you got 5 of these - do the others have that same thing in the fields?

Coins with the "B" mintmark were made in Beaumont-le-Roger. The ones without that were minted in Paris.

Looks like you picked up a nice mixed lot, some better than average finds, including this one :)
