In 1997 or 98 when I was around 16, I pretended to be a lesbian one night on a forum or AIM or something like that. It was an eye opening educational experiance to say the least. Only time I've ever pretended to be something I'm not online... Except for claiming to be an expert on everything coin related that is
Now THAT is interesting! Why did you do it? For fun? Some kind of high school assignment? I'm curious. There is a line in the movie Soul Man that has always stuck with me. The movie is about a rich kid who needs money to attend Harvard because his parents cut him off "for his own good". Anyway, he takes suntan pills and turns himself black so he can get a scholarship. James Earl Jones is the Prof he confesses his sins too. James Earl Jones goes "Now you know what it feels like to be black" and the student says "No, I don't. I could always go back". IMO, that is a very deep, wide meaning movie line. We really don't know what it means to walk in another mans/womens shoes until we try, and maybe not even then....
Why, it was an innocent adolescent thing I did in the early days of the Internet I thought about due to previous statements that spoke to the point of anybody can be or say anything online.
No... not at all. The reverse, of course, would be perfectly acceptable though. It's "funny" how we "really don't know what it means to walk in another mans/womens shoes until we try, and maybe not even then...." only works one way.
No, I have said straight out that I am not an expert, and I've said it more times than I can count. And I, better than anyone know that because I have met and interacted with many real experts, and believe me it is a humbling experience. I have even had the great pleasure of one of my own students going on to become the world's leading authority on certain coins. THAT is a really humbling experience ! That said, I do know what you mean. Yes, there are a lot of people who try to come off as knowing a whole lot more than they actually do. And there are even more people who base their so called knowledge on bad information. And then there are people who merely try to share what they do know, who try to help others. And those people are sometimes misconstrued because of the nature of our medium. And some think they are being one way, when they are not being that way at all.
Let me start by saying, this isn't about me. It is about the very real perception by members of this community that you present yourself in a dogmatic fashion that alienates and intimidates many new members. That said, I remember the thread that you are referencing and IIRC, the majority of times you admitted you were wrong were about very minor things where you simply posted the phrase "I stand corrected." I have never seen you admit in the course of a real debate that you were wrong about anything, even in the face of overwhelming evidence. For example, the black beauty Jefferson Nickel debate, the shovel scoop debate, and the infamous danish gold debate. As for my fallibility, I don't need to search and find examples because I have authored entire threads about my own mistakes and taking responsibility for them. You would be wise to realize that perception is reality, and my perception of you is as follows. You are the best moderator I have ever seen on any forum ever, but as a member, you are a curmudgeon.
I had a buddy years ago who claimed he was a lesbian trapped in a man's body. Assuming he was not referring to a resident of the Greek Island of Lesbos, the original Lesbians, the more you think about that line, the funnier it gets.
Sometimes the best way to do one's part to "kill" a tread is to stop bumping and sending out mass notifications of new posts to it. Just a thought....
