The key to successful research on the Internet - and indeed, to survival at all - is vetting the information sources. Research what is said, then research the sources of your research. You'll quickly find that the immediate naysayers know the least, and stopped at the first step above for what they *did* glean. Everybody's an expert on the Internet, but apparently only a very few are experts at the Internet.

Cole, first of all, welcome to CT...there are a bunch of really helpful people on here. As for the miserable and crabby (they are few in number), I could venture a guess as to why they are, but the verbiage would get me in trouble with the Newspeak police.

Glibly stating a grade is no problem: it can be accepted or not, and can be compared to grading by others. But FAKE is another matter. It can't be nuanced as being a little fake or maybe fake. What would be helpful, and often is done, is to state why a coin appears to be fake.

I'm pretty specialized...or just special. I've never gone after someone, only tried to help and share my enthusiasm. Not many military trade token collectors though. I hate slabs and think they're not good for what I want from this hobby.

True, but often the reason boils down to "It just doesn't look right". Now from a newbie, that carries little weight (which is why I don't use it) but from an experienced and trusted dealer/collector, it might be all you got.

Clearly, you missed the point of my post. The reason why spenser feels the way he does is because of Doug's perceived infallibility. Do you even know how many knowledgeable members he has alienated over the years?

Exactly! Thank you Lehigh96. There are a few more but, not as rude as him. I once disagreed with him and he told me to join some other site. I got Edited : Language. and tol him I'm gone. This site sucks. He said Bye,Bye

Yes, I know far more clearly than you think. I just finished ten years Moderating at a site which was created by a couple whom he alienated, and that's why they started the site. I went there myself in the first place because I didn't like the attitude here, 11 years ago.

I don't give a damn how "infallible" he feels. He's a bunch of electrons to me and has nothing to do with my agenda at CT. If he's wrong, which happens far more rarely than you seem to think in the context of over 30k posts, I will provide proof why so those reading (who are my agenda here, not Doug) can choose for themselves.

I'd have banned you from Coin Community the first day with your attitude, and nobody there would take it today. Count your blessings.

I answered your post but it was taken off due to poor language. This time all I will say is that I agree with you. Doesn't matter if you're an expert in the field, you're still wrong in his book.

Well, what you wrote in post #173 is pretty much the same as what you wrote in #170. Both posts are there, the earlier one got partly edited (language). Would not call that "taken off" but your mileage may vary.

My opinion about Doug is different from yours. Some may dislike his attitude, others appreciate his posts, but the point is, he does not abuse his admin position. Neither do we mods ... well, we try, and it's usually him who tells me or some other mod that we overreacted. :)

Inarguable, and anyone who can continue putting up with moderating after this long deserves a measure of respect whether you like the guy or not. :)

When you are good at something, or what some would even call an expert, it is human nature to take on an air of arrogance. It is one of human's defense mechanisms used to overcome one's own insecurities. Bullying is one of the signs of an insecure individuals.

Humility is a human quality that normally does not come natural. Empathy comes first, then, if one feels inclined, humility.

Yes, I have seen an arrogance (and bullying) exhibited by several individuals on this sight. But, there is more helping individuals than the negative.

And to the helping, humble numismatists, I thank you for sharing your knowledge.

Being a mod is like putting a target on your back. One wrong word and someone is taking shots at you. Some seem to make a sport out of it. To be clear, I have never been a mod but have watched it from the start of internet forums.
It seems like a lot of new folks to forums have a tough time understanding the rules and create problems for themselves. I'll never understand the younger ones that have to use bad language to make a point.

Every generation has to outdo the last, to differentiate themselves. When I was a young adult 35 years ago, not even the most hardened of criminals gunned down random bystanders just to get the target they wanted.

First of all, I'm not a young collector unless you call 59 young. second. The swear word was the equivalent of taking a leak. If anyone out here doesn't say this from time to time then they must have wings

Spenser the point that Jim was making is quite valid, not everybody tells the truth as who they are or how old they are. Example, we have more than a few members who have claimed their birth dates were in 1900 when they registered. We've had 40+ year old guys claim in their post that they were teenagers. We've had men claim to be women and women claim to be men. And that's all Jim was trying to point out.
