hmmmm, sorry. I guess I missed something too. I confess I only read about 2 pages of this before I chimed in. My comment was only an attempt at humor. I had not seen what ever comment had been made about the mod's. I happen to think they are great and do an amazing and often thankless job.

welcome to CoinTalk, where our opinions are worth... well, I'll let you grade that coin.

There are some grumps on the forum, but many more who want to help kindly. Their profile may say they are 68 and they are really 19, or that they are 14 and female and really 36 and males. Who knows? Until the internet ip encode your certified ID, we don't either. So any assumptions of age, sex, professional grader, 50 years a collector, etc. goes down the hill. Those that have written, commercially or as a hobby, on the area of numismatics should stand as 'knowledgeable' , those like Lehigh and others who have, or have had prestigious and internet visible certified collections should stand, those that have written many interesting details about coins ( such as toning here and in other forums) should stand. Coin innovators such as BadThad with his chemical coin products should stand, etc.

In science and other fields it is called "peer review."
Is it surprising that I have seen posts from relatively newcomers debating errors with Mike Diamond, or Jeffersons with Lehigh, or Corrosion with Badthad, or even Market history with people who have searchable records of trading coins of decades? What about the wonderful job the "Ancient coin" group is doing on answering many questions patiently even though often are answered with "sorry fake".

Dr. Seuss could summarize most of thread as "
"until neither the Plain nor the Star-Bellies knew
whether this one was that one... or that one was this one...
or which one was what one... or what one was who."

guess I've have to give them grades in the high 60's with the occasional 70.
and note, I included myself in that ... my opinion? Worth a grain of salt. a 55 on a good day, more often, well circulated 20 or so.
Thanks Jim, you and the others do a gr8 job

I didn't know he made chemical coin products. Very neat. What does he make exactly?

Thad is a professional chemist who developed (invented) Verdigone and Verdicare. I did some testing on his products in 2009-10, and found them to be quite useful as to what they accomplished. I sent several resulting coins later to PCGS and NGC and they all slabbed normally. You can search his ID or mine with Verdigone , verdicare as the subject in the search bar above. Jim.

So someone doesn't misunderstand, I have no financial arrangements, etc with the product so it isn't self-promotion, but he is a nice guy.

I cannot help but admire someone who quotes Dr. Seuss in rational discourse. :)

Thanks! I have heard of the product, but didn't realize he was the person who developed it. Very neat!

Been there, done that, won't do it again without compensation. It's that simple. The job is too damn difficult wherever you do it.

I remember when I use to be more on CC where Superdave was moderating, I thought you did a very good job. I would only do it here or on one other forum where I also like the owners and members as well as here.

If that other forum is the forum I think it is, I wish they'd let Google index the place so they could grow. You have to find it accidentally, and it's a shame because I really like them all (many also post here), they're as good with Busties as anyone anywhere, and I'd be all over the place if they had people/traffic to teach.

CC completely burned me out, desertgem. I put too much of myself into it, for too long, and it became too much a part of my self-image. That's the danger of moderating, boys and girls. You have to find a balance, and I'm not good at that. :)

Okay, let's be honest here, the only one who does what you are claiming is Doug. If you would like, I can provide you with some very long threads where Doug and I have argued for page after page after page. If you want to come out the victor, there is only one way to do it, show the other readers that your knowledge and analysis is better than his. In my experience with Doug, he won some debates, and I won some debates. The difference between us is that he thinks he won them all. The truth is, HE DIDN'T.

Again - what I find in this forum which is useful to me is most conversations are not very historical or scientific but center around grading disputes, cleaning vs. not cleaning and U.S. Federal/Ancient coin attributions with some exceptions. At times these back and forth comments do have a lot of good information in understanding the current main stream of this hobby (or business) and most people's opinions on its current course and its associated problems. With these subject matters there is always controversy. So normally if a Moderator comes in and gives an opinion just digest it/analyze it and move on ... in Numismatics normally after awhile we become elitists in our specialty groups just like I have become (right or wrong) with Contemporary Circulating Counterfeits. I will admit I have less patience with young collectors but still try but then again I avoid discussions generally about grading and cleaning although I do sell my copper cleaner generally only to advanced collectors who are willing to pay the high price - since its expensive to make and indirectly they are desperate. I think we have all seen that 1965-D Kennedy Half Dollar in MS68 (toned) in Coin World recently that went for that dollar amount. How can you have an intelligent discussion with something like that or as Bower's has recently termed it - Gradflation in one of his columns. For that kind of money I could have purchased this U.S. Colonial, that ancient or this medieval silver piece, etc..
I will admit ... that one comment that said I break my coin out of my TPG and then put it into an album ... now that is STUPID! LOL. Some U.S. Colonial collectors do that for tradition ... but even today ... they do keep ALL the TPG labeling with the raw coin now in a flip ... but then again I have opened a grading discussion or a TPG discussion ... I can duck very well ... LOL.

Cole, I,ve recently had a similar experience on this site. The topic was "1964 Kennedy Trans. Reverse strikes". I collect Kennedys so I was very interested in this die variety. I was instructed that these coins are "over rated" and not worth the time and energy of study. I soon found that the web was bursting with inquiries and information on the topic. I know exactly how you feel about being ignorant about a subject and being flogged by the so called experts. I,ve decided to, instead of argue, to just ignore the meanies and get on with it. I have a much better time by just Googling the subject, I have a far better day that way.

Perhaps it would be useful if I sent you a copy of my state ID minus the ss number.I AM 59 and a collector since I was 23 and stopped spending my money on booze and pot. If you choose not to believe me then that's your hang-up
