Hello all, This is my 3rd and recent Ancient Coin I have acquired from my local flea market. Got the best from the bunch the seller had. He wanted $20 but I haggled down to $15.00.. Anyways, I need an ID for this coin. The flip it came in was labeled Trajan, Hadrian and Roman.. What is your ID expertise for me please.. Thanks in advance
Ah, the little-known emperor "Trajan Hadrian" From the legend, it looks like Trebonianus Gallus, Pax reverse; denomination is antoninianus. You can read (sort of) IMP C C VIB TREB GALLVS P F AVG on the obverse. Perhaps RIC 86, Antioch? Wildwinds link to Treb Gallus; scroll to "RIC 86 2 dots"
Yes, Trebonianus Gallus. IMP C C VIB TREB GALLVS PF AVG; VI below bust. R: PAX AVGVS, Pax left; two dots in exergue. RIC 86 (Antioch).
I wondered about that. I think you're correct, VI both sides. The exergue is pretty mushy. Perhaps "two blobs" is a more apt description...
This is an extremely interesting piece, but it is not an uncommon error in this particular period from the Antioch mint and mainly in antoniniani of Gallus with fine portrait and officina marks on both sides, such as the presence of "SC" (on antoniniani), the mismatch between figure and legend on reverse, as well as mismatch of officina mark on obverse and reverse. Indeed, the officina mark is VI / .. (obv: sixth of. and rev: 2nd of.). Here you have another similar example. Very good piece!
