What you have there is a 1944 nickel who has seen better days. PMD post mint damage. Back in the 50's and 60's a nickel still had buying power. A many a war nickel or buffalo I spent for a bag of chips or an ice cream cone.
Nickels from this time period also seen a lot of slot machines plays. Unlike today where tokens are used coinage and even Morgans were used in slots. And yes the machine did damage. From time to time you'll see dealers out west selling off old slot Morgan dollars.
