I'm not a Saint expert, but my personal pick would be for the lower grade coin with the better story. At MS65 and above, any Saint is going to be pretty to look at. A common-date coin might not hold it's appeal like a better date or famous hoard coin.

What about a saddle ridge coin? Actually, will $4k even be enough for any saddle ridge coin?

Suggestions really won't matter much as options are going to be limited to whatever is available at the show. Yes, Saints are fairly common coins in that you can always find them at shows. But, the vast majority at any given show are going to be the common dates in low to mid MS grades, say 62-64 with a few 65's thrown in. And choices are going to be further limited by the budget of $3-4k. I guess what I'm trying to say is that when he arrives at the show he is going to be faced with a small handful of coins to choose from.

So what to do ? Spend as much time as possible researching recent sales on Heritage so he can become as familiar as possible with the Saint market in the small amount of time he has left. And make some notes !

You see that's the thing, before you go shopping for a coin you have to know your market. Otherwise you end up being forced to make uninformed decisions.

Here ya go @GoldFinger1969 My first Saint. Picked it up for $100 over spot after bp last week. Think I got a good deal as they seem to go for around $200-300 over spot in pcgs 63 on the bay :shame:

Does it look like a solid 63 to you Saint lovers?

Got a 2007 gold buff ms70 with it too I thought I'd post here with the saint :p for only $20 over spot after bp which I'm also stoked about... Off to the safe deposit box they go

GD, he may or may not buy at this show....he's also looking online (well, I'M looking online for him:D). He will be patient and wait a few weeks...even months, if necessary.

    Done !!

    Smart...and thanks !! :D

@Cascade: In my non-expert opinion, that Saint is a nice coin. Looks 63 to me. The obverse strike leaves a little to be desired, but it's overall got great eye appeal, and you just can't beat $100 over spot.

While I'm here, I suppose I'll mention that I've always wanted an Omega gold $20. Anybody seen or own one of those?

I would buy a PCGS common date MS66. IMO, them so call "HOARDS" is not worth much premium.

Buy the highest grade you can afford.
    A 1923D would be a nice coin in MS66.

Congrats, nice coin ! Solid 63, could even make a case for 64 IMO.

Another nice addition....what is after bp ?....why put them in a safe deposit box, no where at home to hide them ? Always like having my tangibles nearby.:D

"bp" is short for "buyers' premium."

I keep the small stuff with high value at the bank. The box is free so why not. Plus I have high quality pics to look at if I want :p And yeah bp stands for buyers premium which was 10%

I'm trying to find the thread where GDJMSP went over a bunch of really nice 1923-D MS66's (listed on HA) where the price varied by as much as 75%.

Check it out, Doug was giving some great information he has accumulated over the decades.

    Recent Saint Auctions:

I was surprised this went for "only" $5,200. A 66+CAC ? I believe an MS-67 is going to run closer to $12,000 so I thought that even a 66 CAC would be closer to $7,000. I do see lots of variability in the prices for MS-66 and 66+ Saints.

    https://www.greatcollections.com/Coin/865689/1927-Saint-Gaudens-Gold-Double-Eagle-PCGS-MS-66-CAC

And right on cue, this 1927 MS-67 went for $14,600:

    A couple of MS-66's went for $2,700 - $3,000 without bp.

    A bunch of 1924 MS-66's went for $2,700 - $3,100 without bp.

    Heritage and David Akers Commentaries:

Attached is a PDF which contains recent or high sales data/date, plus a description of the coin for virtually every non-proof Saint from 1907-32. Also commentary about that year's coin and/or it's pedigree.

The information is from the Heritage Archives and borrows from theirs and other catalogs....gold and Double Eagle and Saint books...plus various David Akers commentaries from various sources.

I created this and other compendiums of research and commentaries to be able to access them on my PC and/or smartphone....plus, you never know if something is gone from the internet or Heritage loses or makes this information inaccessible in the future or what.

Aside from Roger Burdette's book and a few others that mention Double Eagles and Saints, auction archoves and sales catalogs are indispensable sources of commentary, data, and information.

Hope this is interesting and useful to Saint fans. More to come in coming months.....:D

    Hello all.

I'm planning to buy this raw $20 1924. It's from a fellow collector here in the Philippines. But I know that there are alot for good fakes even for the most common saint gauden.

    Weight, and dimensions are correct.

Any insight would be appreciated. Submission to ngc and pcgs from here takes 5 to 6months.

Some of my concerns I did encircled. raised bump on "N", a circular small "pitting?"

    Thank you!
