In 1960 I found a 1942 over 41 Mercury dime and in 1977 found two double die 1972 cents.

Ditto here. If only a paperboy made more money and didn't like pin ball machines I'd be semi-rich today!! :D

I vaguely remember half dollars circulating a bit more in the 1970s than now, because I remember getting a bicentennial half in change at a fruit stand in 1975 and couldn't get over getting a coin dated 1976 in 1975. Ikes never really circulated persay but you could find them in banks and I did.

When I was a kid growing up in the 80s & 90s. I saw wheat cents, buffalo nickels, and 40% silver halfs a few times a year.

Now I rarely get anything but MAYBE a lincoln memorial cent from the 60s in nice & shiny condition.

Used to get $1 silver certificates and red 2 notes too.

Funny thing happened last week. I took a picture of a pin that I've got on eBay and so the buyer could estimate the size, I positioned it next to a dime that was in my pocket change. As I was cropping the photo, I noticed that the dime was a 1959! Here's the pic:

There was a wonderful older lady who I adored when I delivered my papers 'back in the day'. Friday was 'collection day' and she'd always have a 'walker' and two Nestles candy bars for me. Gosh darn, the sweet smell of remembrance.........

When I was preteen and early teens, (1950 - 1955) Walkers, Liberty Dimes, Wheat Cents and Buffalo Nickels where still around and would appear regularly. Franklins were just a few years old, and for some reason the Washington Quarters replaced the SLQ rather thoroughly by then. Jefferson nickels out numbered the Buffaloes 3 to 1, but many Buffaloes were war vintage. I also remember silver dollars being available at banks, but even then, people would rather have the Washington Paper Dollar if given the choice. I would go up to Northern Wisconsin fishing in the late fifties (1957-1959), and in the local grocery stores and bars, Indian Heads and some Barber coins would occasionally appear. I casually started collecting currency in my mid teens and not seriously until my early twenties. A lot of my early collection disappeared when I paid for my entire wedding with them. That was a combination of :>) and :>(

Looks are deceiving. I was born in 1941. Lived in a somewhat rural area, so new coinage didn't find us as easily as the urban areas, unless you went to a bank for it..

I would search bank rolls in the mid 1970's when I had the extra cash to do so, made some great finds such as nearly 2 full rolls of dated buffalo's and nearly $125.00 face value in 1964 Kennedy halves out of $500.00 worth of rolls. Circulation finds were the usual wheat cents, war nickels and the occasional silver coin but once at my grammar school store (candy, art supplies, etc.) I did get in change a 1840's seated half dime and a nickel 3 cent piece, probably mistaken as a dime for change, didn't complain, just grabbed em' and ran, I was 8 or 9 at the time

    62. East Meadow, class of 70' I had 95 papers. How many did you have? During the hot summers, I'd come home with newspaper ink all over my hands and face and "silver" in my pockets. Of course, I couldn't save it all. : (

Yes a lot of nickel slots in Anne Arundel county as well as southern md. A neighbor of ours where I grew up serviced slots and juke boxes from Baltimore to Southern md.
He would service, add records to the juke 45 ' s of course, and best of all he emptied the coin box.
I remember going through his cash bags in 65 and six. Buying all the silver I could. :)

As a kid growing up I had a newspaper route. I delivered and collected for the paper. I was paid in just about everything US notes, silver certificates , silver half's , silver quarter's , silver dimes, war nickels, and buffalo nickels.
Since the newspaper cost 2.65 @month that was daily and The Sunday paper. 25 cents for the Sunday paper and around 6 cents daily . Towards the mid 60's everything started drying up.
