Has anyone ever done this with a cleaned or scratched coin?

If the coin gets worn enough you surely could eliminate evidence of a cleaning. Removing evidence of a scratch could be totally different depending upon where the scratch occurs and how deep it might be.

If the scratch runs across a device, it would probably be impossible to remove.

    But that's just my opinion.

All the collectors of lowball coins that I've seen appear to want them slabbed with original surfaces.
So damage and cleaning would show up on the slab label causing the coin to be ignored.

    IMO

I bought a harshly cleaned ASE a few years back (2013?) with the idea of carrying it as a pocket piece to wear it down -- you don't see that many worn ASEs, and I thought it would be interesting.

In three years, it's barely worn at all, even though .999 silver is supposed to be much softer than coin silver. I must be doing something wrong.

My problem if I tried the "pocket piece" tactic is that not much wear occurs when I sit in my recliner and watch TV ;)

Absolutely. It is, in many cases, the "right" thing to do from a conservation standpoint. We want history to see the coin as it was, not as someone cleaned it to be, and if it's in your pocket it's "circulating."

I've carried a cleaned circulated coin before and it has worn off much of the fine hairlines. It's a judgment call whether losing a grade or 2 vs a details grade is worth it

  10. I have a cleaned 2 cent piece that I keep by my computer and periodically pickup & add a dab of vaseline and gently rub. Over time, the cleaned brilliant shine has started to dim and with a little re-toning.

In regards to a pocket piece, I had a 1945-s cent with a touch of dirt/haze the looked better after being in my pocket a few days. After it fell out of the pocket (but later found), I gave up on carrying a "pocket piece".

I've been considering this for an unfortunate 1903 s Morgan. Someone went all Michael Myers on her cheek. It's got xf details now but I'm wondering if it could be made into an acceptable vf.

There's no evidence of cleaning; I just thought I'd mention that too.

I have a nice Stone Mountain half that someone saw fit to inscribe a scratch (X) in front of the eagle on the reverse. It has been in the back of my mind for a long time as to if that could be reversed...nice coin otherwise.

I once had a black lightly corroded 1798 large cent with VG details, I carried it for a pocket piece for about 3 years and ended up with a nice brown problem free Good+ coin.

Problematic, depending on the depth of the cut. Much of the rest of the coin would have to wear that deep also as part of the process, leaving you a P01 or something.
