Really? There's no doubt in my mind that any one of you guys could design a better looking coin then this. The stuff coming out of the United States Mint today is embarrassing to me as an American! Tomorrow, March 1, the U.S. Mint will release the 2016 Richard M. Nixon One Dollar Coin Cover, which contains two Nixon Presidential dollars respectively manufactured on the first day of the coins’ production at the Philadelphia and Denver Mint facilities. It is available for $19.95. The coins are contained in a display card that showcases both sides of the coins; the outer cover bears a portrait of President Nixon, the dates of the coins’ production, the issue date of the coin cover, and a Red, White, and Blue (Forever) stamp. This item has a product limit of 20,000 units — 5,000 more than were applied to last year’s releases in this series, which featured Harry S. Truman, Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, and Lyndon B. Johnson. Of the 2015 coin covers, only the Truman issue has sold out at the time of this writing.
Wow the tricky Dick Nixon coin coming out on this super Tuesday of all days of all years. That's a crazy coincidence. Not meant to be political so let's not start down that path. I just think it's one heck of a coincidence. That president's coin being released on this super Tuesday. Strange is life
Yeah, the coin looks terrible but I think it's fitting in this case. Nixon was a crook and was about to be impeached if he didn't get out of Dodge so he resigned. If I collected dollar coins I'd have to get one, glad I don't collect dollar coins cause I don't want one.
There is an excellent article in the current issue of CoinAge about President Nixon. As President, Nixon had some amazing accomplishments. He does have sort of an odd face though. It's kind of like looking at an SR-71. Viewed from different vantage points, the airplane is very hard to describe (and it's also invisible to radar). Nixon wasn't blessed with a handsome countenance. His face has sharp aspects and pointy parts, etc. I have a feeling that making his engraving would be a real challenge for an artist. The Presidential coin doesn't do a great job of presenting a life-like image of him. John Kennedy was blessed with good looks and look what they gave us for his coin. He looks like he's in mourning. I think the Mint has become a high priced coin store and doesn't put as much effort in to these projects as they once did. We've become just as ridiculous as the Royal Canadian Mint, with way too many products flooding the market, and priced way too high. All my interests can be served with the yearly purchase of the Mint and/or proof sets. Occasionally I'll see a Silver Commemorative Dollar that speaks to me, but that's about it. All the different issues are just too much to keep up with. Jack
And the tired old "police mugshot" design doesn't help. But I bet it'd sellout in a heartbeat -- with one small change... "I'm Not A Crook" replaces In God We Trust.
From the US Mint's website: "Presidential Dollar Coins feature larger, more dramatic artwork, as well as edge-incused inscriptions meant to revitalize the design of United States coins and return circulating coinage to its position as an object of aesthetic beauty." Oh well. Would not call the portrait "dramatic". Then again, I don't see what these $1 coins would have to do with "circulating coinage". The Nixon design is not great in my opinion but I think it is recognizable. In the sense of, show the piece - without any lettering - to people, and many would say it's him ... Christian
"two Nixon Presidential dollars respectively manufactured on the first day of the coins’ production at the Philadelphia and Denver Mint facilities". I wonder if the TPG will have a special label for these.
You should know that the US Mint is Not out there to make it pretty. All they want is to make big bucks
So now I have to wonder......Since nobody likes Nixon or the coin and nobody wants to buy one. It could be a key coin in the set? Or they would most likely mint millions anyway because that's how the Mint works, and it will just be a coin nobody wants!
Don't be so quick to say no one likes Nixon. Certainly, no one likes what Nixon did in the end. Usually younger folks only know about how he, tragically, made a stupid decision to "bug" his opponents offices. He did that out of fear that "secrets" were being given out. He became really paranoid and in the process, lost his office. Those with a little more maturity typically look at his previous 5 years of accomplishments, and it is there that he earns very high marks as a modern-era President. Having said that, I probably would not have wanted him to date my daughter. Jack PS: Madhouse, that's pretty smart thinking. Welcome to the forum!
Scott - Thanks for the beautiful Blackbird photo. I was stationed at Beale AFB, CA, when the SR-71 was still classified top secret. They would only take off, or land, at night. All you could see was this amazing trail of purple flame as they disappeared into the black sky near Sacramento. It was one of my very best assignments. There still is no aircraft that can do what the Blackbird can. It's sad that the only ones that are left belong to the CIA. Jack
