How would you value these toned Morgans?

How do they get toned like that with a PCGS grade? Those are beautiful!

 

A = AT?
B = better, but I prefer pastel colors

 

I find coin A repulsive and garish. I've seen nicer looking AT coins. I wouldn't even care if it were provably 100% natural, I'd never own it. I would pay melt for it if I were feeling charitable.

Coin B is quite nice. I imagine it went for a nice premium. Maybe $400?

 

I set definitely like B. PCGS price guide is $79. Guess it's up to a buyer to decide what the toning is worth, but $400 -- 5x-- seems steep IMO.

 

The question wasn't what I would pay for it; it was how much did the coin go for at auction. I'm depending on the existence of bidiots.

Personally, I'd probably pay $200-250ish? Maybe a tiny bit more, maybe a little less.

I suppose I forgot to guess what the 84-O went for. I'll say $350, because bidiots.

 

I won't comment on price because I know the exact price of both and where they were, but they aren't from where I think you're guessing they sold.

Toning aside that is an above average strike on the 84-O as something to consider as well

 

It is known that Morgans can be artificially toned in the slab. The first is so garish as to be plainly artificial, and this leads me to believe the second merely a more successful attempt by the coin doctor. Their value, to me, has been reduced to that of a harshly cleaned coin.

 

I disagree about the second one. If I just handed you that coin, you probably wouldn't question it, right? That's the definition of "market acceptable."

On the first coin, are there methods of AT'ing a coin in the slab that can affect just one side? The methods I know of involve exposure to gasses, and that will do both sides most of the time.

 

No, I'd question it instantly. It doesn't appear to follow the appropriate toning progression, especially near the rim. The rim should be near-black, not pastel like it is. Just because the "market" would accept it doesn't mean the "market" understands toning progression.

 

As a collector, I like a nicely toned Morgan but simply cannot see the prices they often obtain at auction. I have purchased two toned coins for flat prices -- and neither was a Morgan. In both cases, I was able to study the prices of their untoned counterparts. Both had small premiums that I thought were fair. The toned Morgans just get away from me.

 

125.00 to175.00 I try not to look at the other guesses or comments then do my own research boy I was really off on this one.. 250.00 to 400.00 I missed badly do you take into the consideration the cost of the grading company too. when elevate the coin or not?

 

Wow. That makes me feel terrible for the buyer.

 

HEY I am not as sharp on this coin collecting as you guys are.... just still learning so my predicts are off as you can see.. how long did you feel terrible three or four secs..

I'm shocked coin A sold for that much. That's as blatantly AT as anything I've ever seen.

Coin B does not shock me at all. It has a bit of an unusual pattern, but nowhere to the extent of coin A, and it has elevation chromatics. If someone AT'ed that coin, they did a great job, because I could see that going back into a slab if cracked out.
