Hi guys! I came across this coin and through the magnifier it looks to have doubling in quite a few places. I am still fairly new to this so I thought I would get ya'll's opinion on what you think is going on here. I apologize for the terrible pics, my pets decided to use my light box as a make shift club house while I was gone so I had to improvise. Thanks!
First, welcome to the neighborhood! Unfortunately, the photos aren't clear enough. We would need better close-ups to make a determination. Chris
Thanks Chris! I kind of figured that but I thought I'd give it a shot with what I have. I'll try and get some up soon.
These pics are not really a huge step up hahaha. I will have to fix my photo set up when I get back home. Just FYI, I know this coin is in pretty bad shape. I am not really looking for it to be a gem mostly I just want to learn a little more at what I am looking at. Doubled Die? Machine Doubling? Absolutely nothing at all? I just want to become better at being able to decipher through things. Reading y'all's posts on spotting things or debunking them still feels like someone just switched on Jeopardy when I was clearly still on a Sesame Street viewing level. Any input is super appreciated.
I really don't see any doubling. The coin has taken some hits such as the one on the "I" of LIBERTY which might look like doubling, but it isn't. Chris
Here's a great scope for you and at 5MP, you can take some great images of these cent . http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00RVGHABS?redirect=true&ref_=pe_180010_169951640_em_1p_4_ti
Save this image so you can compare your coins... This image has helped me more than anything else with learning what is a doubled die and what is machine doubling.
300x magnification is useless for coins. Now, if you want to study the mating habits of dust mites, that's another story. Chris
So, what REALLY is the best all-around scope for errors/photos: Phonescope which clips on an iPhone, Dino-lite, or the one Rick has given the link for. I want one soon but want one that will serve my needs, be dependable, and be reasonable in cost. Thanks, Steve
The sketch in #9 above is often misinterpreted by new people to the process of hub doubling, in that they remember notching , but ignore the extra thickness and separation line. Notching can occur with machine doubling that is of very low height ( of course the notching will be of very low height also), but people ignore the height in their excitement of riches. As for the inexpensive USB microscopes, magnification is over exaggerated, resolution is poor due to cheaper array chip ( USB cameras for amateur astronomy use chips costing in the hundreds by themselves and need cooling devices to stay on. You get what you pay for. Here is a composite of 2 photos I took through an optical scopes of flow lines on the surface of a peace dollar for a thread post, the left one at 100X and the right at 400X. If you can find a USB scope that can do this, I would be interested. USB 800X, ~afraid not.
This certainly isn't the best, but it's probably the cheapest. I tried it at home (used rubber bands instead of tape) and it worked amazingly well. https://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-medi...g_north,h_358,q_80,w_636/17z3ujjml0qzbjpg.jpg
It takes a lot of practice to get good images . Here's one from my scope, it's a 2MP and this is with about 50x . It will go to 250x . This image is of the " B " in LIBERTY on a Proof Ike Dollar
When your downloading your images to the site, sometime the site will enlarge them to big when you click on the image So you have to reduce them in size ( -175 ) ..
I have a USB microscope, and I also have a clip on macro lens for my iPhone. The macro lens is pretty useless for coins. If I get too close it won't auto focus so I can't really zoom in on details. Light is the biggest issue with any type of camera. You can't turn down the LED's on my cheap USB micro. If I have a couple of lights on in a room, or sunlight coming through the curtains I can't get a good shot. I need to be in a dark room. I can get good shots but the field is very small.
Here's a nice one Tommy, I just started taking images of . Its wexler DDR . Here's the link http://www.doubleddie.com/828886.html I love these early die state coins ..
