Found this set of Morgans and a black eagle silver certificate at an estate sale. What should I pay? If I should pay?
I had to take a pic of the photo that is online, sorry for the bad pic. It's hard to tell from the picture for sure but will check it tomorrow morning when the sale opens.
Wild guess but the image make the Morgans look polished. I think there were reproductions made of the note but I know squat about them. I would be looking at just the silver value if buying just from the image. Hope it's something cool when you get to see it.
So, I guess it's worth getting up early to go check it out. I'm sure it will be priced as it is an estate sale and not an auction.
If from an estate sale someone should of apprised it. Make sure you have a coa from the appraiser to cya,in case a fake.
As for what you "should" pay, this is something that you really should be able to answer on your own if you're going to be searching out such things. If one cannot properly authenticate and evaluate, it's nothing more than a fool's errand.
Being somewhat new to this, from a rookie standpoint I was merely seeking out advice from the "experts" on this forum. And, I really can't truly understand what the value is until I see the dates.
The best among us cannot offer concrete advice from anything less than large high-resolution images. I'm sure you get that, but I would feel like I was deceiving you to offer any opinion whatsoever from an image this small. The key in situations like this is to hold as a hard-and-fast rule to create a conservative value estimate, and do not exceed it. It's almost certain that the lot will go for more than retail value, because only committed numismatists understand that a "group" like this is always worth more individually. Everyone else seems to think there's greater value as a "collection." And non-numismatists don't seem to understand just how cheap and available Morgans are.
I didn't say there is anything wrong with asking, only that it's more important to know and know for yourself. Anyone worth their salt will tell you the same. And neither can we, which goes to the very point.
So, was able to get in and look at it early this morning. Was unable to even get to put my hands on the box so not sure any of it was truly authentic as there was no COA. They had it priced at $700. And another fella that was looking at it said to me that he wouldn't even pay half of that. They had some other coins in there, commemoratives that were newer that were way over priced. Will see if they are still around on Sunday or not.
