Yah, I've always had one of these Indian punchmark coins in my sights, but I didn't pull the trigger until today ... This lil' dawg was estimated at $75 and I snagged it with an intro-bid of $45 (it seemed like the right price for this yummy example) INDIA, Pre-Mauryan (Ganges Valley). Magadha kingdom. AR Karshapana Circa 430-320s BC Series 3, Phase 1, struck circa 350 BC and slightly later Diameter: 22 mm Weight: 2.80 grams Obverse: Reverse: Reference: ATEC 3273-80; HGC 12, 959-60 Other: Broad flan with various punchmarks on both sides … Near VF, areas of toning => a cute elephant romping around on a sunny day ... Ummmm, and perhaps a sweet lil' bunny? (it's kinda like seeing images in the clouds, eh?)
Post your stuff ............ elephants, bunnies, Indian punchmarks, science fair projects (anything goes)
Just jokes, my Noobish friend => I knew that you would show-up with your sweet examples (very cool) ... thanks for posting your junk Anybody else got some solid punches for me? (gimme your best shot)
Okay, I'll toss-in another stamp (ummm, its not Indian, but it'll do, right?) Mauryan that, my friend
Really like this piece. If it had a handle on the bottom of it, it could pass as a bottle opener? :>)
They are interesting, to the extent that all ancient coins are at least somewhat interesting, but I have trouble getting past the fact that these flans covered with little punches resemble chewing gum stuck to the bottom of my shoe. [ducking for cover ]
Yah, I guess they do look a bit like chewing gum, eh? ... well, kinda I'm probably not going to buy any/many more, but I wanted an example for my collection (I like having an example of all coin-types, so I can relate to the different coin-threads) ... plus, this example was relatively inexpensive "and" it had the cool elephant stamp, so it was a no-brainer => sold!
I'll probably get one too at some point. Just one, to show the range of coin types and techniques. One with some animals, like yours
I just bought this one. I will try to post a better pic of the counter mark when it arrives in a month. Anyone have a guess what is on (in?) the counter mark? The seller says fish? I see 3 to 5 dots, revaluation?? I will have a difficult time calling this one Roman Republican, but it is interesting. Sicily, Syracuse, 400-390 BC. Æ Litra (18mm, 5.80g, 6h). Head of Athena l., wearing Corinthian helmet decorated with wreath; c/m: fish r (?). R/ Hippocamp l. CNS II, 45; SNG ANS 434-46; HGC 2, 1456. Green patina, Fine
