Welcome to Coin Talk. I'm new to this site also but the short time I'v been here I have learned a lot as there are very knowledgeable collectors on Coin Talk. If you're a new collector most members would encourage you to buy the "Red Book". You'll see that no 1933 Half Eagles ($5.00) were even minted. Others have told you how to report this.
I did notice that,, and also that he was selling a 1909 "O" $10 Gold Liberty. From what I had seen on the pcgs's website the last Liberty"s minted were in 1907. Crazy huh.. Great point about picking up a book. I bought two used at a local bookstore, an older 2007 red book and a PCGS Coin Grading/Counterfeit Detection book. I like the PCGS book more but of course they have different purposes. I'll find a newer redbook soon but I am mostly interested in pre-33 coins so this one is fine for the moment.
Honestly, I posted the fakes so people were aware but also to get a feel for what to do, when, where, etc... I was not born yesterday and knew that unfortunately fake listings happened frequently. I did report the item online and I also called ebay. What has been bugging me is the rep's response. It is hard to explain but from the tone of the voice I got the feeling that I should mind my own business.. I did learn a lesson though and hopefully another newb like myself got something from the post.
With Ebay's don't care attitude about fake coins being sold, expect to see many more fake coins being sold by sellers who know they can get away with it.
