USA Coins, a Mac-based program that converts the inventory list to Excel, which I store on my cloud account.
I'm half-way decent at Excel... if I threw something together that would make it easier to enter information into a workbook, would folks be interested in that? Heck, I could even do something in Microsoft Access, or Visual Basic.NET if I dust off my old programming books.
Hmmm, so the consensus seems to be Excel. Man, that's a lot of work. Like @Cascade says, I suck at it also. I'm looking at something like this: http://www.libertystreet.com/Coin-Collecting-Software.htm Your thoughts?
Not really. My program has an almost identical screen. Very intuitive and easy to read. Then it converts the data to Excel for storage.
A recent update puts up generic pictures but there is a function that allows you to put up your own photos.
I had all my U.S. prices and stored them digitally then my laptop died. That will learn me. I think it's really important to keep track of who you bought from, when, and what was paid. With my ancients I've kept track of all that...and a lot more! Maybe someone some day will appreciate it. I know that I'm scared to total it all up.
My program gives me an exact running update of what I've spent on my collection. Sure does cut down whimsical buying.
Really? I'm not sure about that. You're creating an inventory worksheet from scratch with Excel. That sounds like a lot of work to me. This database pretty much looks like point and click to me....and you're done. Everything (I would need) seems to be right there in front of you. Plus you can add your own pictures. $30 or $40 won't break me.
I like Excel. What I do not like is anything that can let somebody 'not authorized' see my collection, via CLOUD or some coin inventory/collection system. Just saying...
I also use Excel, or the Open Office version, which works on multiple operating systems. The problem with other programs is they may not work when you update your operating system. I also have a column for the metal used and a column for the ounces - (don't have any gold). I have totals for the columns with ounces and values (book, paid, sold). I email it to another email account whenever I make changes so I have a backup I can access anywhere. I've also informed my family of the location for this information. Each coin type is on a separate worksheet and one worksheet with the combined total values.
If you don't know computer security, Excel isn't going to help you. You better go back to paper and pencil.
