Yes....just got turned down 3 times on a coin...offered 80% of their asking price (knew it would get KOd), then 90% (thought they'd counter and they did), then 95% (never got a formal response, my offer expired. I thought they would counter at least again). They came down like 1% after my 2nd bid, that's all. Coin has been up for weeks if not months. Adios.....
There's even more expensive with a CAC for just under $2K which I would not want....there's an NGC 1884-CC MS65 that is only PL but maybe if you get it for a big enough discount you can forgo the DMPL ? There are other 1884-CC MS65 DMPLs from non-PCGS/NGC graders, they could be solid for the grade and maybe undergraded (or overgraded). Again, for a discount of 20-30% final price, could be worth it to buy/bid. Maybe even pays to buy 'em and then submit to NGC or PCFS via a crackout (never done it myself).
Most coins at that price level someone has tried to cross before, especially a big dealer if they thought it would cross and could get a couple hundred dollars more for it. A small seller you may have a chance of being successful
You mean they submitted it in the old holder and the TPG didn't even bother to take it out because it wasn't undergraded ? I thought the submitter had to crack it out first ?
Cross over submissions only get removed from the holder if it meets the minimum grade you set. They grade them through the holder and if it doesn't meet the grade you get the coin back in the same holder. Its a bit of a disadvantage being graded through the holder but protects the value of the current label. It is a good way to do it when a one point drop could mean a large loss of value
Thanks, B21, I didn't know that. I thought the owner had to take it out and risk a downgrade. Do you still pay for the evaluation ?
You can only crossover PCGS coins to NGC. All others need to be cracked out. PCGS coins: You can specify a min grade and they only crack it out when the coin will reach the min grade. See https://www.ngccoin.com/news/viewarticle.aspx?NewsletterNewsArticleID=646 I only submit to NGC so I can't talk about the other grading services. All my coins have made it into a new holder so far but I guess you always pay for the evaluation.
I buy all mine graded by NGC or PCGS but if I was to buy raw and thought it had a chance for a high grade that would make it more valuable I would send it in to be graded.
You do still pay. You can tell them to cross at any grade, cross at the same grade only, or pick a slightly lower grade then it already has. You just cannot say only cross if it upgrades. PCGS is the same as NGC except they will take any slab for a cross over evaluation. I am not sure why someone wouldn't just crack an NNC slab or something like that but if you really want too you can try and cross it.
I'm late to this thread. Of the few coins you posted, the NGC coin looked the best. I HATED the spot right under the nose on the first coin. It draws the eye and it would bother me every time I looked at it. Glad you passed. Be PATIENT! You'll be happy in the end.
Judging from the volumes of dollars I have seen at FUN, a small show in Tampa, a 50 dealer show in Ocala, 50 dealers in Lakeland at Collectorama and a small show in Sebring, there a lots of dollars out there..and you can be a demanding buyer
