Here is another old but new coin I haven't shared, an emperor I had long needed but took my time to get. This was got in a trade back in dec. This was the best one as well as heaviest of the bunch in my trade budget for him. The other types with the temple had issues I didn't care for. Maxentius (306 - 312 A.D.) Æ Follis O: IMP C MAXENTIVS P F AVG, laureate bust right. R: VICTORIA AETERNA AVG N, Victory advancing left with wreath & palm. In ex. MOSTT 6.70g Ostia mint RIC 54
Nice coin Mat. This is my only Maxentius MAXENTIUS Follis OBVERSE: IMP C MAXENTIVS P F AVG, laureate head right REVERSE: CONSERV-VRB SVAE, Roma, seated facing in hexastyle temple, head left, shield at side, holding globe and sceptre. Victories as acroteria, wreath in pediment. A Omega T in Ex. Struck at Rome 308-310 AD 7.6g, 25mm RIC 210
Maxentius has more variety in reverses than most of the people of the period. Of the common ones, I like the Dioscuri which come with or without the wolf.
Interestin coin and reverse Mat Some great reverses for him, and a few she-wolf suckling of different types. Following are mine and as a bonus, one struck for his deceased son Romulus Maxentius, Follis Aquilea mint, 1st officina, AD 309-310 IMP C MAXENTIVS P F AVG, Laureate head of Maxentius right CONSERV VRBS SVAE, Tetrastyle temple, Roma seated left, a foot on captive, giving a globe to Maxentius standing right. She wolf suckling Romulus and Remus in pediment. Nice one, Mat. Doug already mentioned that Maxentius tends to have more variety in his reverses. Something else I like about collecting Maxentius over the other rulers of the Tetrarchy - no Genius standing types . MAXENTIUS AE Follis 6.62g, 27.1mm Aquileia mint, AD 307 RIC VI 113 O: IMP C MAXENTIVS P F AVG, laureate head right. R: CONSERV VRB SVAE, a tetrastyle temple with wolf and twins in pediment and Victories holding wreaths as acroteria, within which is Roma seated left on shield, handing globe to Maxentius in military attire, standing right and holding sceptre; between them, a seated captive; AQP in exergue. MAXENTIUS AE Follis 6.05g, 25.6mm RIC VI 45 Ostia mint, AD late 309 - October 312 O: IMP C MAXENTIVS P F AVG, laureate head right. R: FIDES MI-LI-T-VM AVG N, Fides standing left, holding two standards; MOSTT in exergue.
Who has any of his smaller denominations? Mine is a junker but surely someone has a nice one. http://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=1596383 Half follis
I have a 1/3 follis... Would love to have an example of Doug's above, as well as one of these with Maxentius in a lionskin headdress : http://www.acsearch.info/search.htm...s=1¤cy=usd&thesaurus=1&order=0&company=
Great coins, everyone. And I notice no one else posted a victori reverse. Another reason I got it since it seemed a bit scarcer then the norm for him, even if it is a "god" reverse.
that's a solid coin mat, and a cool mint...ostia. i don't have one from there. i'm horribly under mexentiused as well..i have a few low grade one i wont foul the thread with.
Maxentius as Caesar coins are quite hard tofind. Maxentius as Caesar Obv:- M AVR MAXENTIVS NOB CAES, Laureate head right Rev:- SALVIS AVGG ET CAES FEL KART, Carthage standing facing, head left, holding up fruits in both hands Struck in Carthage late 306 A.D. H in left field, Greek_Delta in exe. References:- RIC VI Carthage 51a. The coin is on a full flan, well centered, with a decent strike and the reverse still holds on to decent detail enhanced by a nice patina Nobody elase has shown him in a trabea yet so I will leap in there too. Follis Obv:–IMP C MAXENTIVS P F AVG, Laureate bust left, holding eagle-tipped scepter in right hand, wearing imperial mantle Rev:– CONSERV VRB SVAE, Roma seated facing, head left, in tetrastyle temple (four columns), holding globe and sceptre Minted in Ticinum (//TT). 4/20/308 - end of 308 AD. Reference(s) – RIC VI Ticinum 103
Mat, here is another really interesting Maxentius piece. Have never seen another like it. Reverse shows Emperor seated on trophy receiving globe from Victory; VICTORIA AVG N
