You don't see these in Whitman folders too often

I'm helping a family friend sell a coin collection. Among the coins was the old Whitman 1 cent folders. The first thing I did of course was to check them for the key dates, knowing that they're always empty, but you have to look, right? Imagine my surprise to see this in there. 1931 s penny.jpg

Yeah, I was quite surprised. I don't know what it would grade but it looks pretty nice.

Definitely worth sending in from the pictures as far as I can tell. Good color, good strike. Maybe XF, possibly AU?

I remember attending one of those "travelling auction companies" that visited our area to see if they had any coins. In a small display case near the front there were a few Whitman folders spread open. I noticed that a partial collection of Winged Liberty dimes had coins for both the 1916P & 1916D in their appropriate holes. I started to get excited, but I decided to ask one of the employees if I could look at the dimes. It's a good thing I did! I would have hated to increase my bid thinking it was an F12 1916D when it turned out to be another 1916P. You can never trust those suckers!

Good thing you double checked I would have thought it was a 16D to since it was in its slot

Nice find. I'm thinking an F-12.

Is the 1909 S a VDB? If so it's worth a lot of money!

I actually found a VDB in the wrong slot once. I was checking out the set for a friend. It came from his grandmothers attic. He was so happy he sold me the set for almost nothing. this is the coin. It has problems but still a nice coin.

No, I checked that. The other S is also worth quite a bit though.
