Morgandude and others here are real knowledgeable about MSDs so I will take their word on things that seem counterintuitive.
Oh, you can see them. Does the toning make it less obvious? Yes, but a nice, highly reflective DMPL or PL coin with toning screams out at you--the mirrors aren't reduced by toning, just changed in color and overall eye appeal. This is a perfect example--This is one I have for sale right now on consignment, and while it is toned, nobody will ever mistake it for anything but a DMPL:
Very nice coin. My DMPL for sale is similar, with rainbow around the rim, and golden on the face of it. Have a feeling it will sell pretty big.
Why ? Because the increased toning reduced the mirror finish, or because the grading back then was looser ? I think for PL vs. DMPL they had the same standards (the inches thing) today and then, right ?
Today's dmpl standards are way higher, or so I've heard. It's not an area I specialize in so others can chime in on why.
MD, if I wanted to spend $300 on a DMPL coin, what would you do for HIGHEST GRADE or overall best one you like (how it looks, future price appreciation, whatever qualities you want, etc.)? What about $500 ? $800 ? Obviously, if I go with a DMPL it drives the price up....if I limit myself to $300 I have to go for a very common year and maybe go down to the low-MS60's. With more $$$, I can either get more selective (i.e, CC) or go higher up towards MS-65 or even MS-66 or 67. How to balance the 3 variables -- DMPL (must), grade (flexible), year (flexible) -- for the price ranges. Any commentary appreciated. Also, where do you buy your Morgans -- LCS, eBay, local shows, regionals ?
Anything 64 and under on dmpl's are relativly cheaper than 65 and above because of scarcity and bagmarks as the sub 64 DMPL's tend to have very scratchy fields. 65 and above start getting very expensive because they are more rare and clean ( much less scratches)... and just plain beautiful Another reason I got the one above was because the fields were pretty clean for a 63dmpl
I would look for the MS 64+ and MS 65+ coins in DMPL and PL, particularly. Populations of those plus grades are low, relative to mintages, and one can find a high in grade coin that is not expensive, very attractive, and has great eye appeal. If you see any NGC MS 64+* PL coins, GRAB them, as they are uncommon common dates, population wise, and come up very infrequently. I grabbed one two weeks ago, and it was not overly expensive. I find a lot of them more attractive than MS 66 Morgans.
I go with eye appeal every time. A bit of advice-- there are many PL coins that are near misses from DMPL, and are actually better looking. Look at a lot of the high in grade 64s in PL.
One of my fav. DPL's. I've posted most of mine in another thread. I have three DPL's with this similar purple rim toning. The are not "monster" toners. The fields are very "clean" for a DPL. It's simply a look that appeals to my eye.
Thanks guys...where do you find many of your Morgans ? Where do you find the BEST stuff (or most undervalued) ?
Any thoughts on these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/311533000480?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT http://www.ebay.com/itm/182003956563?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT http://www.ebay.com/itm/301753227146?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT http://www.ebay.com/itm/201512808899?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT They're out of my price range for the most part and I can tell they are probably overpriced by 10-15% for the most part, but wanted to see if you MSD experts consider them worthy of consideration at lower prices or if they are hopelessly overvalued.
