I found a new (old, 1839 edition) book on Aes Grave in a book auction for a starting bid of 650 Euro. That was a bit more than I was willing to pay, so I googled the book. I was happy to find the book in an official reprint on Amazon for less than I spent on my last Pizza Hut order. Kessinger Publishing, LLC said: "This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the original. ... we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions that are true to the original work." Has anyone read the book? L'Aes Grave Del Museo Kircheriano: Ovvero Le Monete Primitive De'Popoli Dell' Italia Media
I've been curious about aes grave and aes rude for a while. Too bad I don't read Italian well. Are there any books on them in English?
There are two good ones in English: #1 is available on line for $35. It has the major types of cast coins and bars from Rome and Central Italy. Italian Cast Coinage; Italian Aes Rude, Signatum and Aes Grave of Sicily Thurlow, Bradbury K. & Italo G. Vecchi #2 is an update and costs a few dollars more. I'm only familiar with the tesserae in this museum. Pro-tip - If you're feeling *extra* cheap, or just want a preview of the content, 99% of these print-on-demand antiquarian books are just printings of scans done by Google. You should be able to find the pdf online with relative ease.
