If your talking about the doubling, it's flat and shelf like which is a good indicator of machine doubling...not really an error and pretty common.I'd also think there's some die deterioration goin on.
@usmc60 Be on the lookout for the 2000-P SC quarter with the "extra twig" on the reverse. It's a short scratch on the die from the wren's right foot heading east-southeast. It's fairly easy to identify because it is a little thinner that the other branches. Chris
Thanks for your quote your right all but about one thing except one thing the problem occurred at the mint not outside the mint logically that makes this a mint error and here we go using that word common there may be a few out there so far 2 in 2000 that's not counting the other 4000 that I've already gone through I kinda would not say that is common but they are out there
Call it what you want, it doesn't give the coin any desirability especially in that condition. By common I mean the doubling...machine doubling is by far more common than a real doubled die variety.
Let's be politically correct it came out of the mint that way and I'm sure not intentionally it may not be a desirable error but it is still a mint defect it's just me I prefer to say there are a lot of hd or md out there but if you can put your hand in your pocket and pull out your change and show one of these coins I will agree that it is common if not not so common I just don't want to give the new collectors out there the impression that every handful of coins you'll find an error even one like this
