Should I break coins out of NNC slabs before submitting to TPG?

I am getting ready to send my first batch (of about 100) of coins to PCGS for grading.
    Most are in NNC slabs.
Should I break them out of the NNC slab for a more honest appraisal?
I am concerned that PCGS might have a bias against NNC slabbed coins and grade them lower.

    rickmp Frequently flatulent.

Will a reputable TPG accept coins in basement slabs?!
Hopefully, you received them in those slabs and didn't submit them yourself to NNC for grading.
If you bought them in those slabs, I hope you didn't pay for the listed grade.

All coins (including the NNC slabbed ones) are part of an estate that I was asked to appraise and sell off for the owner.
The NNC slabbed coins were done about 10+ years ago.
Thousands of coins... US and world coins... in cardboard packets, with about 100+ in NNC slabs (there are also PCGS, ANACS, and other slabs)
Right now I am looking at submitting the US coins for regrading.

At shows, I've seen ANACS and ICG accept submissions still in fly-by-night grading slabs. They may want you to give them the minimum grade you will accept before cracking out the coin.

I think PCGS and NGC want coins sent in flips. So crack'em. The grades probably have no relation to the actual condition of the coins :hilarious::hilarious::hilarious::hilarious::hilarious:.

And I :hungry: cannot wait for the first ignorant :sour::confused::bucktooth::wacky: idiot to say that ANACS :angelic: and ICG :angelic: are terrible grading services. Just because their coins don't bring the same amount of money as NGC and PCGS does not indicate this. IMO, these two company's slabs are "ripe" for picking :greedy: correctly graded :bookworm: and under-valued :greedy:gems by informed  dealers/collectors.

I strongly advise you to crack and submit raw for any coin where "crossing" is not imperative - for instance, when you need a chain of identity for a Registry coin. I personally would never submit a coin in a third-world slab. We have no clue how they really work those on the floor of a TPG, and I want no prejudicial preconceptions possibly involved in a submission.

If you are mainly looking for a competent evaluation, I should call each service and ask for a deal. You'll have the best luck from ANACS or ICG. The service will be quicker, the cost will be cheaper for the estate, the coins will be graded correctly and you can determine a value.

At shows, these two services evaluate coins BEFORE letting the person submit them (a great MONEY SAVING customer service). I would bet that they might let you even send them in for an evaluation before picking the coins worth slabbing. You will probably be charged something for the coins that don't pass muster.

It would really be helpful if you let us know what you did! :).

ANACS is a consideration... for coins we estimate (after doing our research on each) to be valued under $100. They have a "special" right now on "Dollars & Cents"
However, we are to understand that (sight unseen / internet auction) NGC and PCGS coins would bring a higher value at sale.

Buy the coin, not the slab!

PS. I like the small, white ANACS slabs because they're cute!:):):):):)

I would crack them. Regardless of any bias against the slab you are already at a disadvantage with a cross over when it comes to grading because they are doing it through the plastic and will be more conservative in their evaluation from not getting to see the coin raw. Cross overs are more expensive as well and really are for coins where a grade down would be a big value loss.

PCGS will cross over coins from any slab if it meets their standards. NGC will only do cross overs for PCGS coins.

PCGS does if it is not a cross over. NGC you can fill out a form that gives them permission to crack a coin out and grade it raw if it is slabbed by someone else. I am not sure if PCGS would do the same, they might for a coin or two as a courtesy but I suspect you would get an email if you sent in a large batch like that asking to be graded raw.

PCGS & NGS bring best price. I would still CALL all the services and see if you can beat the ANACS price. You have nothing to loose.

Funny you say that chris. About 6 months ago I got my first of what I call "hotel soap" slabs. I'm hooked now and look for them specifically :)

If @Cascade responds, I'll be sure to tag you so you will understand my reason for asking.

By the way, I sent your wife my address so she can send those pesky ANACS slabs to me.:yawn::yawn::yawn::yawn::yawn:

I haven't had the situation you've got but my inkling would be to break them out. I like PCGS/NGC slabs because someone might have to sell MY estate. Good luck!

I only have 3 or 4 so far and put them in my pcgs blue boxes singly between 2 other pcgs slabs in their own slot but they can rattle around a little when moving the boxes obviously

    @Insider

I used an NGC box for storage with a foam insert that fit perfectly in the slot. The foam inserts were made specifically for Eagle slab pages to insert the small ANACS slabs, but the Eagle pages weren't all that great.

I have a few of the White ANACS slabs. They seem to fit nicely in the silver NGC storage boxes. I don't use anything additional. They are typically in full boxes, so they don't move around.
