I purchase a 2016 ASE from Paradise Mint already slabbed by PCGS. It has a different PCGS holder for the 30th anniversary. They now won't fit in my wooden slab storage boxes. They are definitely thicker and therefor can't fit into any of the upright slots designed for the holders. Anyone else with this problem? Is this their new standard or may this be a special holder designed for the 3oth anniversary or Paradise Mint? In the past, this was never an issue. FYI below for comparison.
Old measurement of the lip running completely around the slab: 6mm thick and 5mm deep. New measurement of 2016 lip: 8mm thick and 4mm deep.
I checked some of my pcgs slabs. All my coins from 2015 and 2016 are in slabs that appear a little bit bigger then the older slabs.
I have the same ASE in bullion and collector grade from years past and they all have the smaller lip on them. I can't see any reason to do this unless it is a anti-counterfeiting measure for this year. They still interlock together but my storage boxes will not accept the new 2016 slab. As you see above, they are 2mm thicker. Enough to prevent the slab from fitting into the slot.
It's true. The new PCGS slabs won't fit in the old boxes. I have a couple slab boxes without any "ribbing". I just store them there.
They basically redesigned it with a new plastic that is clearer and more scratch resistant, but the extra thickness is a new seal that have on it that is supposed to be water proof.
