It's amazing to me how the SF Mint hammered the early date Morgans, but their Peace dollars are generally softly struck. Did they lose some experienced press operators and had poor training of new workers? This was meant to be a rhetorical question.
I agree lol. The 23 S, 25 S, and 28 S at 63 and 64 (pretty much) look the same. Having low luster, a weak strike, and mediocur eye appeal. Sure there are a few exceptions, but I feel this true for the majority. By 1935 the SF mint seemed to have things figured out. The 1935 S is nicest peace dollar BY FAR out of the S series.
I have a nice 64 for every above mentioned year. My favorite, is my 1925 S as well. Mine has a nice orange copperish tone. It's actually one of my favorite peace dollars in my entire collection.
I've actually struck up a conversation with Roger Burdette about this subject. I'm hoping to get some insights from him. I guess I could re-read his Peace Dollar book, but it's fun learning directly from him. If I get an "aha" moment, I'll certainly share it.
Here are some of mine. I am also working on the Peace Dollar Set in BU. Missing 28, 28 S; 34D & S; and 23D .
