Hello I recently came across a 1788 Massachusetts Common Wealth coin and was wondering about authenticity and value of the coin. I have attached photos of the coin. Any help or information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Welcome to the forum Kyle! I read something about these in Coin World magazine this month, July 2010 but I don't think it shows a coin like yours. Maybe someone else will chime in who knows more but I can tell you that there have been alot of fantasy pieces made from that time frame. I don't know if yours is a fantasy piece or not but it looks really nice!! I'm back, I looked around on google for a minute and I found a link for ya. Yes, unfortunately it is a fake. There are so many copies of early American coins around, they definitely out number the genuine pieces!
yeah i thought it was fake but I wanted to get another opinion on it. A few things led me to believe it was fake such as the san serif lettering, the real ones are serif lettering. Another thing that led me to believe it was fake is the weight of the coin, the real coins are solid copper, this one appears to be aluminum coated with copper.

Yes it is also a fake. I don't know what it sold for, but if it even sold for the opening bid it was because whoever bought it didn't know what he was buying and almost certainly thought it was real.
The picture posted is of a lower end copy of the Massachusetts Cents from 1787. Someone asked how to tell a fake from a real. There are some very deceiving copies out there, but this one is a bit easier to tell the difference. Attached is a photograph of an authentic MA Cent in high grade. The most obvious differences are in the crispness and "non crude-like" legends and date. Look at the Ms of COMMON on the Indian side for example. They are very different. Also, compare the 178 of the dates to see some major differences. Lastly, and the easiest observation in this comparison is that all authentic Massachusetts cents have a star between the bow and the Indian's head. Hope this helps.
Hello and thanks for this older post. Very informative. I have acquired a potentially rare 1787 Mass Cent (28.0 mm, 10.9 g) with the arrows in the right talon. For obvious reasons I am skeptical, but I have not been able to find any images of fakes of this extremely rare variety. All help welcome. Thanks.
But of a totally different variety. Doesn't matter, the coin in question is a fake. Looks like a casting sprue above and to the right of the indian's head.
