That is amazing, since he was dead from the previous November.

Born 1959, been collecting since 1968 (9yo), when I worked on farms during summers and bought an Odd-Type US Coin set (F-VF 1/2C, 2C, 3C Nickel, 3C Silver, 20C) for $75. Got a Trade Dollar in F condition for $40, then collected CWT, HTT, some Love's for several years. Sold most of them off (still have the first set, Trade Dollar and first CWT) to raise 6 daughters.

Now as-deep in Ancients, focused on the Roman Res Publica, Carthage, Makedonon, RR Italic Coinage, etc. All BCE. My Focus is on History, not technical Numismatic approach.

Lots of responses here.....can you add a poll to this thread or create a new one, with a poll only (no responses) and it can tally all our age groups ?

    Ditto.

First below 99 years of American military numismatics:

Can we get older military numismatics?
    Yes if we leave America.

    My oldest so far...

Very nice! I still need to show you my Challenge Coins (they be cheap and insignificant, but mean something to me as US Army personnel gave them to me in handshakes...) Just been too lazy to pull them out and photo! :D

Ya, I remember ;) I would love to see them. I have a new challenge coin to add to that thread. It's a pretty sweet Rammstein Air Base one with a C-130 in the center with the rest of the fields cut away. Second time I've been here...time for me to get one!

And I don't think challenge coins are worthless...they're largely physical pieces of sentiment!

My bad, it was Bobby who signed them. I only saw JFK a couple of times there.

Will be 40 in less than two weeks, bit by the collecting bug in '85 at the tender age of 9 thanks to a trip to Canada and getting some change from there, started going to shows and buying in '93-94 when I actually had a job and a little money in my pocket.

I'm 19 and I'd say I began around age 6. Hopefully I have a kid or grandkid someday that likes collecting so I can gift my coins to him/her. Or at least I hope I don't have a deadbeat kid who spends my collection at face value! :jawdrop:

I am 36 years young and coin collecting hooked me in when I was a kid but things changed and I lost interest in coins. After joining the Army in 99 and then being deployed multiple times after September 11th, I started looking into coin collecting in order to fill my time and help me coupe with my issues. Coin collecting has in its own way helped me in dealing with issues incurred from the military.

Thank you for your service. We Americans don't thank you guys enough. :D

I am not an expert on bullion or numismatics (except Saint-Gaudens, somewhat) -- though I have good knowledge about both -- but if you EVER need any financial or investment advice, please contact me.

Memories sometimes fail you. It might have been Robert or Edward or even Jackie who signed it as a tribute.

Well I should have read farther down the thread. It does make sense though.

I'm about to turn 58 and have been collecting 50 years. Like many, I have gone through buy and sell phases with various emphasis on particular sets. I recently disposed of the bulk of my Large Cents, but kept a handful including a 1797 NC-5. Though holed twice, probably by a soldier's father so his mother could sew it into the son's coat, it is by far the rarest coin I have ever owned including a 1799 S-189 which was the rarest by date and most expensive.
