Hey all happy super bowl Sunday! Over the weekend, I acquired 50+ year untouched collection ranging from silver dollars to old currency (I will post a separate thread on that) and these two stuck out to me. The 20 cent piece first struck me as a proof ( the hairlines are indicative of such), but I am also worried about it being cleaned. The toning is insane and I can not fully photograph it to capture the beauty.

The second is a high grade 1923 s peace dollar with some odd hazing... it appears to be a weaker strike but has minimal wear making me think it will grade a 64-65. The hazing is mostly white but when turned it gets brown in a few speckled places as shown.

Please excuse the photos as I took them with my iphone. I will be sending them to PCGS this week

    Thanks as always,

Can't even guess from these pictures. I'd need bigger pictures, with the coin on a flat surface and the camera directly above.

20 cent is a proof. Tough call from pics but I see a fair amount of hairlines I'd call 62-3 cameo. The peace has a ton of luster again tough call I'd say 64

Are those scratches on the front and the back of the Peace dollar ?? Again can't really see the 20 cent piece. Too small.

Soak that peace dollar in acetone for a day and see if it helps

I am a little uneducated in the acetone bath, but ill definitely look into it. Looks like Walmart has a brand named onyx acetone that is 100% ill give a shot. I sent them out today, needed to get a few others in so ill let you know the results. Knowing pcgs's history the peace may not grade with that gunk, but ill take a shot at it.

If it does not grade, would you recommend the standard acetone procedure of soaking for a day, removing and placing in distilled water?

    Thanks,

    Kyle

I think that Peace will grade without acetone. You should consider conservation IMHO

Thank you for the comment, I actually may do that then risk messing it up. Once it arrives into PCGS's hands I will call and inquire about such

Peace Dollar is nice, based on the pictures. I say MS63. Nice toning on the 20 cent piece! Did you send that to PCGS as well?

Thanks for the comment! I was thinking the peace would grade a little higher it really has no marks on it. I may actually call and see if its a good candidate for conservation. The 20 cent proof definitely went to pcgs along with another 1889 that was highly toned. I personally collect seated proofs to this was a beautiful suprise in the collection i bought. The toning is amazing and will have the pcgs true view images and share them in about 3 weeks : )

I would certainly not touch the 20c, that coin, even from the blurred view, looked spectacular.

Thanks for the compliment Dimedude. This 20 cent proof was one of the first coins I noticed when I opened the box and I was stunned by the toning. Then realizing it was a proof I was ecstatic (my collection is mostly seated proofs and have been looking for a 20 cent for some time), but it definitely is not perfect. I would say it will grade a 60-62.

It got checked into PCGS yesterday and I have done a true view on it, so once it is done I will share the results.

Honestly Santin, there were so many coins and so much going through my head, I was just in awe. Morgan dollars in federal reserve bags (around 100 uncirculated 140 circulated), 100 in face in old currency, 100s of misc pre 1900 world coins I didn't know where to start. Took me about 3 days to inventory and I definitely still missed something.

Maybe once they come back graded I'll write the whole story on how I acquired them. There really still are some untouched collections out there : ).
