Trying to decide on what to get for tonight. Pennies, nickels, dimes or halves. Any input on this? I will be getting a box of whichever I decide on.

Are you stopping at multiple banks are just one? If just one, will they allow you to buy more than one box? How much are you willing to spend?

I will be going to just one bank. I am looking to get just one box. Willing to spend the cost for a box of halves but looking for something a little more interesting too. Have plenty of time at night the next two days.

Depends on how much money you have, how much time you want to spend, and what you're looking for (silver or errors).

Pennies can be fun to search through - you can elect to keep copper coins, and there's always wheats, AU/BU older dates, 2009's, and a few varieties like "Wide AM" that you could reasonably expect to find.

Nickels are also fun - older Jeffersons are still common, and there's the occasional war nickel or Buffalo.

Dimes are boring and tedious to search - not really much to keep an eye out for other than silver (rare) or proofs (rare).

Halves can be a jackpot of silver, or you could wind up with a sea of 1972 and 74's.

I can't get boxes of halves where I am without ordering, so I would be partial to getting halves if they have them in. If you want to spend a lot of time going through them, then I would suggest cents. If you really look at each coin for errors/varities it can take a while. Good luck and let us know how everything goes!

Speaking of those, I found some 1972 "NO FG" on the reverse side in a box I recently went through. Gotta go through my 74's again because at the time I wasn't sure what to look for.

What Shoegazer said. Also quarters can be fun for a while if you're interested in filling a book. But you'll almost never find one before 1965. Still, there are so many varieties of states, territories, parks... those will take you a while to accumulate in pristine condition. Took me years.

I mostly get Cents and Nickels. With the occasional box of the other types for variety. If my bank has customer rolls, I always buy them, regardless of type. Sometimes if I'm trading in a box and they don't have another, I'll just take my change in quarters or dimes.

    But I hate searching dimes.

I have only been doing this about a week and have done every role but nickels. I did a whole box of halves and a whole box of pennies. Those were very fun. I didn't get anything on my box of halves so I am thinking of going to other areas in the city, different demographics, etc.

OK, here's my plan to get me to the weekend. A box of pennies tonight and a box of nickels. That will keep me busy with the magnifying glass. Friday cash in my box of halves that I already went through and then get new box of halves Saturday. Will be fun!

Rainy day BWR box of Cents. The box started out great with 2 wheatbacks in the first roll, but slowed down to a crawl with 14 null rolls, then had a decent finish. Last roll had 3. Funny how that goes.

In all, 21 wheatbacks, 10 Canadians, and my first Panama Centesimo. All but 4 of the wheats were from the 50's. One from the 30's, and this 1927 was the oldest, with just one ragged 1974-S. Decent number of wheatbacks, but no great finds today.

Halves are usually the most profitable, while quarters are the least. If you want old coins go pennies and nickels though.

Results: 1 box of BWR pennies:

Five Wheats and 2 Canadian 1c.
Bummer but I got a whole box of dimes to go through now!

Fun to find one of these in a box of nickels

1913 type I and in decent condition. At least no nic-a-date needed.

That was number 19 for me. 1 shy of a full roll. Surprisingly, I've found more Walkers than Bens.

Do you ever look for the 1974D, Double die Obverse?
