This is my first coin post so please be gentle. With that, I have a 1971 dime that seems to have a non-existent "We" on it but the area where it should be seems raised to me instead of flat. Also the "In" portion is very blurred and "smoothed" (for lack of a better word) in appearance as well as the top of the "L" in liberty. the I have not been able to figure out if this is some sort of mint error or PMD. Any ideas? Sorry for pictures, still trying to get an established method/area. I can take different angles if needed. Thanks.
@dookie4fun The best way to take photos is from directly overhead. For lighting, try putting one light source at 10 o'clock and another at 2 o'clock. If the anomaly you are trying to image doesn't show too well, try rotating the coin in 90 degree increments to see if that helps. Then you can use photo software to rotate the coin back to an upright position. From your photo, it appears that the coin was a product of a grease-filled die. That would explain why part of IGWT is missing. Chris
Yes, also known as "die deterioration" - such as what happened to this nickle I found the other week! It may look like an error on your coin but missing letters or doubling is just from a badly worn die. Usually can tell by the lines in the fields of the coin pushing into the letters and numbers and heading into the rim.
Looks like a good example of a Grease Filled Die to me. Welcome to CT. Enjoy the fun, laughs and humor. Ignore the smart comments and learn form the members all you can.
