Any sede vacante collectors on the forum? I have been pursuing sede vacante talers and medals from the German States for several years. Most people associate sede vacante (i.e. empty seat) with the Vatican, however, several German and Austrian States issued commemorative pieces in the 1600s and 1700s to commemorate the death of the bishop. My newest addition is a 1719 sede vacante medal from the German State of Munster. Classified as Zepernick 220, it commemorates the death of Arnold von Wolff-Metternich zur Gracht. 1719-munster-medal-AU55-rev.jpg 1719-munster-medal-AU55-obv.jpg

Here is another sede vacante medal I picked up recently from the German State of Wurzburg. Issued in 1795, it was struck to commemorate the death of Franz Ludwig von Erthal, the prince-bishop of Bamberg and Wurzburg from 1779-1795. The reverse features Madonna and child with Kilianus, Colonatus and Totnanus, who were Irish missionaries to Germany in the year 686. 1795-wurzburg-ms63-obv.jpg 1795-wurzburg-ms63-rev.jpg

When that set was issued, Cyprus was indeed one country. Ten years later (1974) it was split, and the "Greek" Republic of Cyprus continued using those coins (today they use the euro) while the Turkish north uses the Turkish lira. What I find interesting - in those years Cyprus used a 1-1000 system instead of the much more common 1-100 setup (that they adopted in the early 80s) ...

A while ago I gave up on the 1 and 2 cent coins. Fortunately they have the same design as the 5 cent piece. ;) So my "set" contains six coins only, and that is fine with me.

That is an awesome looking medal. It would be interesting to research all of the different shields.

The official mint set is running around $200, but I saw where one recently went for $135. I have located a "Starter Kit" for $100 which has the 1 and 2 cent Euro. I may go that route if I can find one for a little less. I also noted the 1000-1 system. Must have learned that from Turkey and their circulating 50,000 Lira coin. They even had one as high as 150,000,000 Lira in a Gold coin. Massive inflation.

I know this is a very common coin ,however I just love the design and had to have it.Typical Spanish coin shields and lions on the reverse, But I really love the design of the anchor 1949 Spain.jpg and ships wheel on the obv.

I also picked this up so cheap I'm afraid you think I used a gun to get it. an 1995 Kookaburra semi key to the Bullion coin collection . only 154,247 minted out of a product line of 300,000 coins. So almost half the amount they planned to produce got struck. Yeah my lighting is off as this coin is spotless except for the one toned spot on the Rev. 1995 Kookaburra.jpg

May be common, I have never seen one, even in junk world coins I have gotten and searched through.

But thanks to ebay, now I got one, so thanks @Paddy54 :D

You may know the story of the arrows. :) The originally issued version of that 50 centimos coin had the bundle of arrows pointing down. Here is a similar example from the University of Salamanca, featuring the "Reyes Católicos" Ferdinand and Isabella.

Now the same bundle, but with the arrows pointing up, was a symbol of the Falange, a movement "absorbed" by Franco. So apparently somebody decided that the arrows had to be turned around ...

In case you're not aware, the true date is in the star to the right of "Espana."

I just happened to get these Spanish 25 centimos coins today. Spanish coins seem to have no collector interest at all but I like these. 1925 spain 25 centimos.jpg 1927 spain 25 centimos.jpg 1934 spain 25 centimos.jpg 1937 spain 25 centimos.jpg

Those that follow this thread know I love my mint and proof sets. Every now and then I find something special or unique. This is one of those. Australia pumps out a lot of mint and proof sets and the market is getting a little crazy on some issues. One needs to research to find the ones which are more desirable than others. And why.

This 1991 Mint commemorates the 25th anniversary of the decimal system in Australian coinage. Here are a few reasons why this one stands out.

Mintage of 25,000 is 2nd lowest of Australian mint sets. 1999 at 500 is lowest of published mintage figures. There may be some lower but I can't find published figures.

This 50c commemorative was only minted in 1991

The 1,2,and 20 cent piece all have a mintage of 148,000 each
That makes the 1 cent the key with the lowest mintage
The mintage for the 2 cent is 2nd lowest
The mintage for the 20 cent is 4th

The 1 and 2 cent are only available in the set. If the Mintage on the set is 25,000 and the mintage on the coins are 148,000. What happened to the other 123,000?

Krause list the value of this set at $245! Take that for what it's worth. Someone take a guess at what I paid.

This set will have a place in my "special set" collection.

It would be worth a lot more if there was an "E" in the lower star. Spain dates their coins with the date of the design introduction. The "date" in the star is the mintage year.
The lower star should have a 19 and the upper the year. In your case 51 for 1951.
This coin was issue from 1951 to 1965

I can't read the date. A lot of the time they are impossible to read because they are so small. It makes it frustrating to put a set together. You almost always need a loupe at least.

$20-30? I've seen these sets around a lot. If you like the designs they just released some new ones similar to those this year.

Exactly. Wish I could sell it for the Krause "retail". It is nice to pick up some low mintage coins however.
