But it still does not relate to the OP's coin is my point. There are no ragged tiered edges on any grease coin I have seen and I will bet you cannot find a struck through coin with edges like that one.

Like I said, I've seen hundreds of similar coins. I can't bet for two reasons: 1) I don't have the coins any more to prove my point; 2) Even if I did still have them, I don't like to take money from people on a sucker bet.

It's one of only two that were reported for that date/mintmark. The other was sold raw in 2005 for $555. It was also found by the seller in one of the Mixed P&D bags from the Mint. Mine cost me 68c because the grading was free.

However, it does come with a funny story.....

Back then, any member could make an appointment to submit their coins in person at the NGC office in Sarasota. I used to do it all the time because I only lived 1-1/2 hours south. It was a good excuse to take my 84 year-old Mom along for the ride and have lunch near St. Armand's Key on the return trip.

Anyway, when I picked up the coins (50+) I couldn't find the Kennedy error coin. I told the customer service woman, so she left to look for it. About 30 minutes went by, and she came back to tell me that she couldn't find it. At this point, they even recruited some of the graders to help with the search. Another hour went by and I was really starting to worry. Finally, it was found. It seems that the vault was searched numerous times, but nobody was looking for a copper-colored Kennedy!

Jeezzzzz! What the hell would have happened if it hadn't shown up or they said they lost it? That's scary! I would have been jumping on someones desk!! I have never checked, I probably should. What's the policy for coins being damage or lost while in the possession of the graders?

They would be responsible, but the remuneration would almost surely be negotiated since the only other "comp" was the one that sold for $555.

It does have a small rough edge near the L and U but nowhere near as ragged or deep as the ops coin . Though I'm still thinking lamination , I could see struck through if there was some metal or larger debris caught in the grease .

Whatever it was, it was there when the coin was struck. The reverse would show it if it wasn't.

Rusty, the debris doesn't have to be large, and it doesn't have to be metal. Every time another planchet is struck, the mixture gets harder and when more grease and debris adds to the mix, it gets harder and larger. After a while it gets to the point where it is harder than the planchet, itself.

Then that could be a game changer , as I guess there's enough pressure to change grease into a solid .

Not entirely unlike the mixture of concrete, sand and gravel that is used for roads.

The one thing that still troubles me about a strike through is the lettering .

That is the way a struck thru looks! Note the smooth surface in the crater. The microscopic "look" of most laminations is rough. OK, the inside of a struck thru can also be rough BUT this is 100% struck thru.

The more I think I know about coins , the more I know I need to learn . So far errors and how they are made has been the hardest for me personally .

Grading's a breeze compared to errors . I really wish they had a good book explaining the minting process , from open collar till modern presses . With large detailed pics . So far "From Mine to Mint" is the best but the pics are too small and there isn't enough of them .

Mine to Mint is a great book. It can be a little "too much" because it is well researched but I'm chugging along thru it. I do not recommend a beginner tackle it as his first book on the subject.

Many of my older books from the 60's - 80's remain in storage. I have forgotten the names but let me describe them and other members can fill in the blanks.

!. Morgan and Peace $ Encyclopedia has an excellent intro to coin making suitable for everyone.

    2. Modern Mint Mistakes. Alan Herbert I think.

    3. How coins are Made. Breen I think.

    4. ANA Correspondence Course.

Finally, with the Internet these day's, all the info in books is probably available on line. I'll bet there is even a film similar to the one I saw on the Discovery Channel.
