All this talk of Half Dimes has me wanting to buy one now. I wouldn't buy this coin raw however (PCGS or NGC only).
This is a good thread. I have been off the market since middle of last year. Just started buying again. Now looking for key dates and more rare coins. I think I will keep the few MS69-70 modern coins in any case, I like the look of them and only have a few.
I have an eclectic mix of modern bullion, early US coins and World Coins. I have not added any Ancients yet. For example, I have a complete set of the 2012 Australia Year of the Dragon colorized bullion pieces. I think they look cool, so I made them a part of my collection. Overall, the most money spent is not on this type of coin/bullion, but on US coins dated 1935 and earlier. However, I like adding modern bullion pieces when I like the design. Your collection is just that: yours. Assemble it anyway you like. If you get "tired" of something you can always sell it. What series has you most interested now? Walking Liberty Half dollars? Capped Bust Half Dollars, Seated coinage? Just curious.
They're not selling for anywhere near that much nowadays. I'm running a PCGS-graded VF35 on eBay at the moment and can't get $794 for it.
Obviously, the 09-SVDB is not a rare coin. It is, however, extremely popular and that accounts for the price. I've got a foreign gold coin, with a mintage of 300, that's worth just its bullion value. The key to value is demand, and my guess is that there are fewer than 300 people interested in my gold coin. By contrast, there are many thousands of collectors interested in the 09-SVDB and that demand keeps the value ridiculously high--although it has come down recently.
As for me, how about Seated quarters? the 1883, mintage: 15,439 Valued in F-12? $325 stupid. 1869 S Mintage 76,000 value in VG-08 ? $235. Any Seated quarter from 1879 to 1888- check mintages vs values. crazy low
Has anyone noticed how underrated the later date Mercs are? You can easily get even rainbow toned 66 examples for under $50.
I think the Buffalo Nickels are pretty underrated. But will likely be as popular as Morgans in the next 20 years or so as the next generation of collectors enter the hobby. I've been putting in a lot of time studying the series. I have not made a purchase yet but I'm planning on doing so soon. Likely a nice MS65 or better
Overrated: + Most of the modern silver commemoratives + Last year's bullion silver rounds; also applies to almost every year before that, save for any hiccup or low mintage years... the prices are ridiculous! + MS/PRooF-70 coins; seems like a bubble's going to pop Underrated: + Some of the classic silver commemoratives + Very high grade buffalo nickels + Hobo nickels + Proofs that are rarer than their MS counterparts, but are valued the same or even less + ANACS and other lower tier TPG coins when the exact same grade can be applied to them raw, but they are sold at a much lower premium over PCGS/NGC coins. Just right: + Peace/Morgan dollars - lots of people love them, but they're not priced as exorbitantly as some other coins. + War nickels + Some other modern US silver coins, lots of demand for coins such as JFKs but they're extremely reasonably priced. Same for Ikes.
I'd rather have an Ike than a Sacajawea and that's saying something. At least they made Ike's in silver. And Don't even get me going on SBAs those are to me the worst circulation coin ever produced
