    chrsmat71 I LIKE TURTLES!

sweet, green, BIG and HEAVY....just the way i like 'em!

i don't have anything that matches exactly, here is a coin from sicily with a counter stamp (or more overstruck maybe, kind of close here) however..

Thanks for not bidding against me, ancientnut (I owe ya)

Yes, I was also attracted to this c/m example because it still had great animals remaining on the under-coin (host coin) ... I think the hare is great and I also really like the crayfish (super cool)

I don't have an example that isn't counter-marked, so this baby is probably still good enough underneath to keep me from buying another one for a while (it may act as my eagle-hare example "and" my cool c/m example)

thanks for the comments, gang ...

=> please continue to post your sweet examples, gang (thanks)

I would like to see links to better examples of Steve's coin. I have not seen them. The countermark appears more clearly on host coins that are worn slick and I have seen a couple with stronger undertypes but not at all clear faces on the c/m. In addition, this one is not even the common variety of undertype as shown by the legend behind the eagle. No one cares about that sort of thing but a sale that regularly draws large multiples of estimate really should have driven this one to twice the price. When this old cheapskate says a coin went too low.....

The coin has some history considering what happened in Akragas about the time it was issued. Google it. My junkers below show more pedestrian versions of the common variety with and without the countermark. I'd love to see your mint state examples of either.

    Congrats Steve---That's a super example!!!

It seems I've run across a Clio-like type by the handle of 'grecoroman'---who keeps edging me out on bids...

Anyone know any ancient Roman curses??? LOL

    Very cool link!

@Mikey Zee I think the one below can be adapted...

Lord Neptune, I give you the man who has stolen the solidus and six argentioli of Muconius. So I give the names who took them away, whether male or female, whether boy or girl. So I give you, Niskus, and to Neptune the life, health, blood of him who has been privy to that taking-away. The mind which stole this and which has been privy to it, may you take it away. The thief who stole this, may you consume his blood and take it away, Lord Neptune.

    Oh, by the way ...

Ummm, I'm pretty sure this my sweet OP-coin is actually a hemilitron, not a tetras, right?

28 mm & 14.71 grams => that puts this cool dawg in the hemilitron category, eh? .... it's a big baby!!

Yah, I'm merely resurrecting this old thread of mine so I can post a couple of random things ...

    a) the Super Bowl is now only 3 hours away (ooowwww, and I have tomorrow off => party!!)

    b) it is snowing like a @8%t# right now ... but there is always a silver-lining, for my two dogs love it when I shovel snow (good times!!)
