For coins that likely circulated heavily or went through a slot machine in a casino yes it's pretty common.
The coin shows a lot of wear (for a Kennedy) and probably spent a lot of time going through one armed bandits in Vegas or other similar locations. The excessive use rolling down the channels in the machine has worn down the edge.
If the OP circulated among lots of women for 40 years, he'd probably look worn on the edges, too! Chris
