Any chance????????? Septimius Severus Denarius. 193 AD. IMP CAE L SEP SEV PERT AVG, laureate head right / VIRT AVG TR P COS, Virtus standing left holding Victory and spear. RSC 752. Info and pics from Wildwinds.com
What is the size? It looks like a sestertius. I think Markus may be right-- reverse is probably Virtus. Do you collect modern coins? I think what you are seeing as a number is the beginning of the obverse legend read upside down. Here's the OP coin, edited for ease of viewing: Something like RIC 673. Here's a high-end example from CNG's archives: Septimius Severus. 193-211. Sestertius (Orichalcum, 26.32 g 6), Rome, 194. L SEPT SEV PERT AVG IMP III Laureate head of Septimius Severus to right Rev. VIRT AVG TR P II COS II P P / S C Virtus standing left, holding spear in his left hand and Victory in his right. BMC 511. Cohen 756. Hill 73. RIC 673. Rare. A wonderful coin with a superb portrait and a very attractive dark green patina. Extremely fine. The OP coin reverse suggests an Athena/Roma/Virtus-like helmet and a knee-length garment and similar arm drape thingy. The figure's right hand is reaching out in a similar posture.
Steve has the 193 AD sestertius of this type but the OP is the later one with different obverse and reverse legends. I'll show mine just because I NEVER beat Steve to posting something.
Wow! Thank you gentleman! I've spent hours researching to no avail. I appreciate your knowledge on the subject.
That's a beautiful coin! I'm not planning on selling mine but do you have any idea of what mine is worth?
