I have not cleaned the penny. Any suggestions as to how it became like this? Thank you

I think I saw a video where they connected wires to a Cent then ran some high voltage into it in order to shrink the coin. Maybe one possibility.

could have been in a dryer a long long time.... or a parking lot find that has seen rain sun heat for a long long time
could have been underground corroding of a long long period of time.

Is this what a cent would look like if the copper was stripped and allowed to corrode?

Judging by the teeth marks to the left of Lincoln's head I believe a groundhog used this coin to sharpen his teeth. That also explains the darkness of the coin. It's all PMD. :)

Looks to me like it sat in the ground for 20 years until someone found it.

The copper layer corroded off. It must have sat in something acidic for awhile.

It could be environmental damage. The composition of all pennies struck after 1982 was 97.5% zinc.

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

I'm having trouble deciphering the pictures, but it almost looks like it could be someone's attempt at a cast copy.

Just to throw this out there, the penny's rim is much thicker and it looks more like it is thick as a nickel.

I think you might be right on the cast copy.
