Just found an Indian cent CRH. Happy to see it but was disappointed someone had cleaned it improperly. .. oh well
One of my favorite coins of all time was an 1863 IHC I dug up as a kid at my grandma's farm. It was maybe a G-4 and probably spent 100+ years underground.
I once found a 1903 IHC in a roll. I was so excited. If I found a 19th century one I think my head would explode.
Hi I saw your reply about metal detecting. I metal detected for years until my health would no Longer allow me to. I started back in the 1970's when I lived in Coloado. I have a box of coins and jewerely that I found. The most valuable coin I found was a1908-S Quarter. I was detecting across the street from where used to be a bank and it had been torn down When I dug it up it was in a dark looking soft soil and it looked like it just came from the mint. I have not looked lately but the last time I checked the red book it was listed as 850.00 It was not the oldest coin I ever found, the oldest was a 1797 large cent in very rough condition. I think I found Almost at least one of each coin minted in the US. A lot of the old silver one's look brand new even though they had been buried over a hundred years. My goal was always to find a gold coin but never did. I moved to Alaska In 1980, Most silver coins I found up here were mostly from 1940'S until 64 There were just not many people up here back in the old Days to lose them. Anchorage did not even exist until 1915. I did find a few older ones but I always suspected that some kid got into his Dad's coin collection. The last 4 years that I was able to metal detect right after I Retired, in the winter I would fly down To Las Vegas and about half way from Vegas To Kingman Arizona, in the NW of Arizona there is a small town Called Meadview, I metal Detected gold nuggets and meteorites in Gold Basin side of the mountain, and on the other side of the mountain is a place called the King Tut and Queen Tut Mine. On the gold basin side you could dig up a nugget and maybe two foot away you could dig up a Meteorite. But the larger nuggets were on the King Tut side. At the time it was not that unusual To hit a patch and take out an ounce of gold in half a day. For finding gold I started out with a mine lab 2000, Then a Mine lab 2100 and finnally a mine lab 2200. The last year I was able to go I thought we pretty much had the area cleaned out. A few weeks ago I got a phone call from a guy that lives there, I had not heard from him since about 2004, because I did not come back someone started a rumor that I had passed which I have come close so many times, anyway he has upgraded through the years, and now has a mine lab 4300 he is now getting down twice as deep as we were able to. He is now Dow to a new layer of gold and the nuggets are a lot larger. I found Nuggets from less than a gram up to six ounce. He sent me pictures, he is now finding much larger He recently found one that was 11 ounce. I am in bed sick or I would get on my desk top and send you some links about the gold and meteorites. Sometimes I use to be able to hunt all day and not see anyone. The other day I was looking on the Internet and it looks like gold basin has turned into a city. But if you would like to see the place, just goggle gold basin Arizona, lost basin Arizona and Meadview Arizona. You said that you like to talk to people that metal detect, well so do I.
That is truly amazing hearing from a real detector, most of the videos and stories you hear now are made up or the **super rare coin** is planted, but cool that is really amazing! I don't think I have enough experience to write a page like you did but I hope one day you may be able to detect again. Good luck and Happy Hunting
I've been detecting since 1988. Now I use Whites, well for the last 20 or so years. Lately not a heck of a lot of finds.
I think that I was very lucky, because when I started detecting there were not that many people detecting yet. I only wish that the detectors back in those days had the technology that today's Detectors do. The first detector I ever used was an old bounty hunter BFO, first generation technology, then they came out with TR Technology, which the first one I used was a Compass. I then opened up a metal detector shop, and I had dealerships for the Whites, Bounty Hunter, Compass, Garrett's and Terso. I was lucky in that sence that I got to try out every new model that came out. Then Whites came out with the 6 DB and the 6000 D. When they came out with the 6000 D is when I really started finding some great coins. That was the best dector on the market for many Years. The last Whites Coin machine I ever owned was an Eagle Two. For many years I did not detect Any more until I started going to Arizona Nugget hunting. My last two years that I was able to detect I used a Mine Lab Coin Machine, can not remember the model name, but I just wish that I could have Had it back in the old days. I know in this day and time it must be really hard to find good places to hunt. Back in the 70' S you could hunt almost any place you wanted. I hunted the parks schools church's and typical places. One place where I used to find a lot of old coins, was in the old parts of towns, was the strip of grass between the street and side walks. I could tell you some stories, but you probably would not beleive them. If there are any tips that you would like to know drop me a line. Mike
Its always confusing when people talk about metal detectors for me, whenever someone says Garrett I'm thinking they were talking about me and not a metal detector lol.
It is possible to "clean out" an area so as to get no "hits" but all that's left are the real deep old ones! Try adjusting the machine's controls to the instability threshold and search again or wait for a good soaking rain.Find new ground to search is the best way to get the goodies. Best of luck and HH!
