I have an opportunity to buy a complete flying eagle penny set. What would be the value of that? I have not seen the condition of the coins yet.
Well if you don't know what coins it contains/their conditions we can't really help you out with the value.
no... I may look at them later today with a list of key dates in my pocket. He has 2 books of indian heads. One book has the flying eagles, neither book is complete.
Yeah, a 'complete' set would contain the proof only '56 which is a four figure coin, and highly suspect as a counterfeit.
If you don't know how to value the set, high, low, and/or everything in between, are you confident that you would be able to identify altered or fake coins inside? Perhaps not the greatest concern with such a tiny date set with modest asking price, but slipping an egg in is a fine way to turn junk to gold if/when dealing with someone who doesn't know you from Adam.
I suspect this "complete" set just includes the 1857, 58 LL, and 58 SL, which is a complete set of the 3 basics, and probably VG-F condition at that price.
Did the offer come from someone here, in a PM? I had someone here ask me what I would pay for such a set. I could not even guess a price not knowing what was in the set or the condition of the coins.
i agree with daniel, its most likely just the three coins but cannot put a value on them without seeing the condition of them....
A closer look at his pic showed only 3 slots for 3 coins, I read that the '56 was so rare they didn't leave a slot in the coin books for it. I made a list of coin values. Going to meet at Starbucks with my magnifier. He has 3 books of Indian heads. I'll check for key dates
I met the guy and looked at the coins he had. All the key dates, and date ranges were missing. The rest were worn really bad, maybe $2.00 coins. I passed. A little research this morning paid off.
You probably could've avoided the meeting altogether had a few select questions been asked, but am guessing you didn't want to give him a reason to look deeper. Can't say I'm surprised there wasn't anything special as that's how it usually works with so-called "sets" offered like this. Nothing ventured nothing gained, I suppose....
I didn't want to ask if he had a 1908-s, or 1856. I'm sure he knew darn well what he had. It was probably what was left after he went to the coin shop.
