I'm one of the lucky people that got to see the OP coin in person - what a great coin! I'm glad you found it. I suppose if you don't find the coin you're looking for at NYINC, you aren't trying hard enough.
Love the posts---but I'm starting to get more and more jealous of TIF I think I have lost track of what has been posted.. But here's an Agathocles of Syracuse and a sellers photo of Hieron and Poseidon with an upside down trident
Well, I may as well toss-in a couple of older examples from Akragas & Selinos ... => these ol' AE cast sweeties haven't been out for a while ... What a great coin, Collect. Your other big Sicilian silvers are enviable as well! Here's a little litra from Abakainon. The town is not on your map, but it should be just around the 9 o'clock region of your Messana coin. SICILY, Abakainon AR Litra 0.58g, 12.5mm Circa 450-400 BC HGC 18 O: Bearded head with shaggy hair right. R: ABA, Boar standing left; acorn before.
I have been trying (unsuccessfully) to limit my collection to stater-size silver of Magna Graecia, so posting coins of that area would include most of my collection! Not that it would be a daunting task. Since I limit myself to quality instead of quantity and am selling off many which don't fit, I have 16 Magna Graecia coins.
what a great grab! that eagle isn't chopped liver either though, and cool legend....i didn't know about the boustrophendon thing either..neat! lovely coin, i like you second pics as well, shows the shape nicely and make the eagle look a little sweeter! here's my favorite coin from sicily, no crab but it does have a nice eagle! Sicily, Syracuse, 4th Republic, Late 3rd Century BC O: Zeus Hellanios R: Eagle on thunderbolt, SNG Cop 788, 21 mm, 16.4 g
Scored this crab while bottom feeding. Its a good coin despite my eagle looking like a pigeon. Sicily, Akragas AR Nomos (BC 510-500) 24 mm x 8.30 grams. Obverse: Eagle with closed wings standing l., AKRAC-ANTOS around Reverse: Crab. Ref: ANS 911. Dark gray toning
Great new score, Noob ... => in ancient times, the eagles and pigeons lived in harmony on the shores of Akragas
