I know I am going to get the tongue lashing I deserve, so allow me to tell you a bit about the 1943 D coin. I found an old steel coffee can about half full of wheeties, I bought it and separated out all of the steel cents, I generally put all the steel cents in some mild soap and water to soften the rust and then rinse them and put them in a mild solution of Tarnex and water.. I know I know never clean the coin. After 10 min or so I checked on the bowl and immediately saw the copper so I got it out and low and behold it was this 1943 D copper cent. So maybe by my carelessness I have completely ruined a genuine copper penny or just cleaned up a fake one. I just wanted everyone here to know what I did to the cent.
You will get more responses with your own thread rather than jumping on one already going. Welcome to CT Della.
Here they are again. I made them to small the first time. Please explain how it could be an altered 48 or 42. The 3s tail is to long for the 8 and well for the 2 it looks nothing like a 2. Are you just posting to post something?
There is lots of ways I find hard to believe. They can drill into the edge and expand the metal. They can cut off the old number and glue on a new one. They can cut off part of a number and move it wherever they want. etc.
WOW I was unaware of all that. Ok with that being said holding it in my hands is a lot different than looking at pics online. The reason I asked is because so many people find it so hard to believe that one could surface that they automatically jump to the conclusion that its fake, yes it has some imperfections but just because it isn't a new and perfect shinny penny everyone's first response is again and again its a fake. I am humbled and very appreciative of every ones input, I think I am more confused than I was when I started..LOL. I think I will just send it in and have the pros look at it, it cant hurt..
Yep, go for it. Seems like a pretty big waste of money to me. I know it's hard for you to trust strangers on a forum that you recently joined, but there are plenty of experts right here that have already given their honest opinions. We are coin nerds here and would actually love to see a true rarity discovered and show up here, but the truth is that we see hundreds of fakes show up here every year.
This was a genuine circulated Lincoln cent that someone changed the last digit of the date in with some metalworking and engraving skills. I do not believe this was done recently. They've been altering these for over 50 years
Do yourself a favor and take it to an authorized PCGS or NGC dealer. I assure you they will tell you the same thing I have said.
Here is the pcgs coinfacts. Photo of the only genuine 43 d Lincoln. Notice the 3 of the date not the same
So I have a few more to show. Should I start a new thread or since I have a great group of guys attention already put them here?
