Picked this up at GC a couple weeks ago for $1075 total which means I got it for almost exactly spot. I'm thrilled with it however I didn't know it came in such a huge case, which is pretty cool, but boy is it a space taker-upper (is that a word lol)... enjoy! It appears the private mint made these in other years but I believe 2005 was the first. If anyone can dig up the various years they were struck, as they are identified as such, and mintages that'd be awesome
It would have been 5 ounces of gold had it been made in 1876. The reverse design doesn't appear to be of Morgan's making, as it doesn't appear in his sketchbook. His eagle reverse sketches of the period are much different, and can be seen on his various patterns.
I do like the design, and having it certified and having its purity listed by NGC is a big help. The only downside is that the coin is tied to the price of gold and does not have numismatic value. Still, it looks cool. And if you're happy, that's all that matters.
Not true. They sell currently between $1300-1500 on the bay. I'd say that's a hell of a decent premium (Not to mention instant equity for me)

I absolutely love history through numismatics and if it has to do with George T. Morgan all the better. All I can say is I'm glad Morgan's design beat out Barber's design for the silver dollar...
Yup, with all the in-fighting with Barber against director Linderman, his golden boy (morgan) won the race to the chagrin of both Barbers. I would have loved to be a fly on the wall in those days. I can only imagine the rancor the barbers had against morgan and their boss. I mean if your boss brought a new guy from another country in who reports directly to him while being subservient to you (barber) his technical boss because he wanted fresh ideas implying that you and your son were getting complacent and stale how would you feel. It would be the highest rated show if they had reality TV back then lol

It's certainly a nice looking ounce of gold, and I definitely can't argue with it for melt. I'm somewhat surprised they got away with putting all those legends and a denomination on it, though. That's essentially what landed von NotHaus in hot water. @jwitten That 5oz is cool, but at a 28% premium over gold spot, if I were into bullion, I'd probably go for US Mint silver pucks.
