Grading

  1. Like to get people opinions on grading company's especially which are the best, and what they think about ANACS with brown label?

NGC or PCGS. Sticking with the top 2 is never a bad way to go.

You're going to find many different opinions on this subject.

    > Some people like ANACS because they are cheaper and don't require a membership fee.
    > Some people don't like ANACS because the prices realized upon sale are usually less than NGC or PCGS.
    > Some people prefer NGC because they have good customer service and even though they have a membership fee, you can become an ANA member with submission privileges to NGC without the membership fee.
    > Some people prefer PCGS because they claim that PCGS slabs always realize higher prices upon sale, but that isn't always true.
    > PCGS fees are higher than NGC, and NGC fees are higher than ANACS.
    > If the cost of submissions is your greatest concern, then go with ANACS, but don't expect their slabs to sell for the same amount that an NGC or PCGS slab would.

I agree with cpm9balls writeup. Since you mentioned starting a Morgan collection in another thread,I will give my opinion on ANACS grading of Morgans, seems like the circulated grades are where I have seen them push the (over)grading the most. The blue slabs are often overgraded, but the earlier slabs are well respected. Most of what I see in the current gold label usually seem properly graded as far as the uncirculated grades (some may disagree). You should be able to buy ANACS slabs for less, just know that they will sell for less. In general I will lay my ANACS graded, uncirculated Morgans right alongside my NGC/PCGS Morgans.. No matter who's holder they are in, try to buy good-looking coins with minimal marks on prime focal areas. Eye appeal is important both as far as satisfaction in owning a coin and when it's time to sell.

Anyone can feel free to disagree with my opinion of Anacs grading of Morgans, I like to know what other people think!

Can I jump in here? Which company do you think would be the best for error coins?

Depends - ANAC's will label some that NGC and PCGS do not. Not all are the same. I also like the post by Chris. If I was getting something graded I would use PCGS or NGC, but that is me. If I am buying - I look at all of them. I also believe some of what I collect PCGS is better than NGC and NGC is better than ANACs. My opinion only. You can search and read all the various threads on the site - such a hot topic.:)

Yes, that reinforces my thoughts. Thanks Mark!

ANACS is the only TPG those of us who concentrate on Morgan varieties will submit to. Not only do PCGS and NGC attribute only a subset of VAMs of their choosing, they do not do it very accurately. ANACS attributes them all, and gets it right.

I'll only use ANACS if they have a special that I can take advantage of.
Otherwise it's PCGS or NGC for me.

For errors, ANACS and NGC are cheaper than PCGS. If you have a monumental error, or an error on an older coin, pay for NGC or PCGS. PCGS is a flat $60, NGC is $15 + the standard fee ($16-30), ANACS is $7 + the standard fee ($12-49).

ANACS's biggest advantage is that they will certify ANYTHING. I'm pretty sure you could send them a washer with your name scratched in it and they would label it as a 1/1.

Thanks for the feedback @jester3681 I have a few (not so premium) coins slabbed by ANACS. I guess I'll stick with them. Besides, I thought PCGS grades anything!

Mint "ERROR" on this slab???...Really?? Is someone out there really going to tell me that this "WASN'T" malicious intent by a mint employee?!?!.....probably a supervisor. Either that or a carpenter putting a new roof on the mint, accidentally dropped a nail and it ended up under a die in the press.

I never did the research....I wonder who the seller was?......The MINT??

  13. Nope. I know the private owner from Instagram. He was ecstatic about the price realized. About 10-15k more than he thought. Nice guy as well.

  15. I have no idea. We are just fellow numismatics that post a good amount on Instagram. I just know him from seeing his posts and liking his pics every once in awhile.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying anything illegal happened here. I'm just curious about the origin of the piece. Wouldn't it be funny if hundreds (or thousands) of those dime/nails started flooding the market.

  17. He owns a company. He was the one who got it certified and sold it. No other backstory given.

Interesting story. Thanks for the feedback!

  19. The odds though..right?! Sometimes I think the Mint does this on purpose just so they can make more money...ohh..here's a slice of bread..lets run it through.

There's another one on ebay (or at least was recently); a cent if I recall correctly, and PCGS as well. They, as with many more off-the-wall or oddly significant "errors" are almost certainly the result of a "little helping" hand.

Contrary to what some seem to think, the TPGs do not exist for the benefit of collectors or this hobby. They are a business, and as with any real business, profit is the greatest consideration and is what drives their actions. PCGS may have slabbed the two mentioned nails, but each TPG has "certified" items and/or promoted gimmicks that purists may find questionable. None are immune...

  21. Im saying even the Mint falls under your terms. They have all the incentive in the world to do these types of things.
